Oh and get your ass to the movie and see this.. It is rather shocking that probably the #1 SUPERMAN fan on this site hasn't even made it to see this movie yet..

You need to get your eyes checked young one.. Put a pic of both Reeve and Routh up, side by side, dressed as SUPERMAN and CLEARLY, you'll see there's more Masculinity, more intimidation and sheer Presence from Reeve than from Routh who looks more like he step out of a modeling gig modeling boxers in front of Bryan Singer.. Routh required shoulder pads, Reeve didn't.. Routh required 4 inch heels on his boots which elicited a snicker or 2 when I saw this and Reeve, well, DIDN'T.. Reeve was built like a brick shi*house and when he was in the alley charging, changing into the Man of Steel, he meant business and you didn't get in this guy's way.. He was barrel chested and fit the role to the "T".. With Routh though?? I'm a Big Guy and even I felt like leaping through the Silver Screen and knocking him on his ass.. I shouldn't have to feel that way with a character with the top billing of MAN OF STEEL.. Routh was MAN OF HEART.. Put me in the fuc*ing sequel and I'll destroy Routh and do what Lex Luthor couldn't.. At least it'd be fuc*ing original..
Routh is the new metrosexual Superman, and the guy can't act - that's why they barely gave him any lines. But he does do a fair Christopher Reeve imitation and poses pretty...

Wow, Superman REturns is getting killed over at IMDB. I think the legs for this film will be very similar to MR. It will have a good opening, but it will drop like a stone afterwards.

The flying sequences in Superman Returns are simply amazing. Technology has come a long way since Neo looked pretty fake flying in the Matrix movies. The space shuttle sequence was one of the best action sequences I have ever seen. That only bad part is that there are no more great action scenes in the movie. I thought the ending was anticlimatic and far to easy for Superman to get rid of the grwing island. But overall, it was a very enjoyable summer film with amazing SFX and I hope they make another one with more great action sequences like the space shuttle one.

Kind makes you remember Superman flying back time. Thats why I like the 2nd the most, because once it gave the plot, it didnt have an overly elaborate end, just a nasty and brilliant trick by superman.

Right, maybe the fact that I had *zero* anticipation for this (as in I-don't-give-a-crap-about-any-superhero-movies) had something to do with it, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Great time, quality production, and quite enthralling. Makeshift, you bring up some interesting criticisms.... some I do agree with (the film did drag and was somewhat anti-climatic) but I'm not bothered. I'd give it a strong B+/A- and I'd say its the best film I've seen this summer.

Did you ever see the family guy parody of that scene. God I like Superman II the most in the series, but I can't wait for Donner's cut of the film. about 50 minutes of the film will be never before seen. lol!

Well, Richard Lester may nto be the director that Donner is, but Superman II is a fantastic film and he has to be at least partly responsible for it.

Well I went to see SR last night. I must say I'm having a hard time grading this film. As I left the theater I felt like something just wasn't right and I knew what it was... This film should've followed in the footsteps of Batman Begins and started the series over again. A fresh new start and retelling of the story for todays youth. My teenage daughter thought it was just 'ok' and her reason was that she just didn't understand all of it. She never had seen the originals and I guess I didn't explain enough to her before going last night... Much of the film borrowed from the original, heck the plot with Lex and his realestate felt copied. I kept noticing similarities between them. The flight with Lois through the city. Kitty and Miss Teschmacher both feeling attracted/sorry for Superman. I guess I felt that Singer would have done better just restarting the series....Now, what did grab me??? Routh! I think he was the perfect choice. Now BKB has touted that no one could fill Reeves shoes, and hey I was there at the same time growing up so I agree to an extent. But that was then and this is now. They're not Reeves shoes to fill anymore and they fit Routh to a tee. Physically lets not kid ourselves Routh is in much better shape the Reeve. I think both were equal in acting. Revee did have a more chiseled face but Routh and the better physique. I think Routh (or Singer new how to) had a more natural feel for the powers of Superman. His motions looked more fluid and gentle... I think it goes without saying that the effects were great. Again you just couldn't do justice to the character back in '78' with the technology of the time. I also like the way Singer threw in references to the gods. The piece of art work on the wall of the ship. Superman catching the Daily Bugles globe reminded me of Atlas with the world on his shoulders. As he looked down at earth from the edge of space, listening, watching, as if it was his to protect and care for... I think Bosworth was miscast. She just hit me as a little too young. She did a fine job but just never felt right. I gotta say I never liked Kidder either. Between her scratch voice and 'ok' looks I felt Superman just deserved better (lol)... Luther,,,Spacey was great, better then Hackman who also did a very good job. I think his crazy side was just more vicious then Hackmans and I liked that... I liked the twist with his son, it opens up the doors for anything down the road.
So, where does this all leave me? I'm leaning toward a B, B+. I think if Singer just didn't shit around and made this a totally new Superman from the start it could have easily been an A. Donner told the better story, it was after all a beginning. No matter how I look at it I'm glad to see that Superman is back. My opinions to the side it was a solid restart to a classic hero. I think the story Singer told will lead to bigger and better things in the next film....Its gonna go up, up and away from here.
For reference, a few of my rankings of other superhero films
Batman Begins A
Superman 2 A-
Spiderman 2 B+
Superman B+
Superman returns B/B+
Spiderman B/B+
X2 B
X-Men B-
Batman B-
Batman returns C
Hulk C-/D+

See it on 35mm. Honestly, the IMAX, from what I've seen, worsens the SFX.

I saw it for a second time, this time in IMAX 3D - only because I'm a madfan for IMAX 3D and had to see it's first use in a mainstream live action film, not because of Superman Returns.
And I agree with sunnier - the IMAX, though nice for backgrounds, did make some of the FX look fake or misaligned. Certainly not worth going out of your way to see. Also, the fact that it's only used for 20 of the 153 minutes is quite distracting. Little icons flash up on the screen signalling you to either put on or take off your glasses. The 20 minutes was divided up into 5 segments in the movie, and it really pulls you out of the story. In Polar Express, the last feature length IMAX 3D movie I saw you forget your wearing the glasses after a while when wearing them continuously for the whole show.
The trailers for the three upcoming IMAX 3D animated movies looked much, much better (3D-wise) than SR - (ie: The Ant Bully, Open Season, & Happy Feet - BTW, that Happy Feet has gotten an ecstatic crowd reaction after both the different trailers I've seen - it's gonna be big!)
As to Superman Returns - it was even more boring the second time. I'm lowering my rating to:
2 out of 5.

saw it today. wow. loved it.
the one thing that preturbed me was they heavily edited down the earthquake to make room for the action on new krypton, which i found less exciting. that said, routh was incredible. bosworth was amazing. lexwas great. but marsden, posey, hunting, n the kid all held their own if not stole their scenes. the kid was so cool!

The movie is a fine return for the Man of Steel. The performances are good but for Spacey who turns in a poor performance. May be the fact Lex is a very poor villain is the reason. I loved the scene in the kids' bedroom and outside with Lois at the end. Action scenes are very good. The score which pays homage to the original is quite good.

my fav scene was the opening credits. those were easily the best credit sequence a big movie has had in a long time. routh was really good; i cannot believe hpow good he was with the drama, especially at the end. thje kid was kid too. hell everybody was good. bosworthhad great chemistry with both routh and marsden, making the relationships much more believeable.
