12 Years is far from a masterpiece, but this is no Argo or Slumdog Millionaire or Million Dollar Baby

Shack is a parody of Armond White.
This is a great, and deserving winner.

Quite a few people also feel 12 YAS is overrated and a mediocre execution trumped up by importance card. Other than people in this thread its imdb board is polarized for example. (And I also nod in approval at the "Hated it" section's insights)

Everyone I know outside of the internet has been blown away by it. And my Uncle, who is pretty tough to please, LOVED it.

 Re: 12 Years a Slave
Ranking since the century began.
1. Return Of The King 2. Gladiator 3. The Departed 4. Slumdog Millionaire 5. No Country For Old Men 6. The Hurt Locker 7. Argo 8. Million Dollar Baby 9. The Artist 10. 12 Years A Slave 11. The King's Speech 12. Chicago 13. Crash 14. A Beautiful Mind
So certainly not the worst. And I like new-Shack. For awhile I thought we were losing him to the snobs.

Shack manages to incorrectly overanalyze parts of films and throws his support and bashes the wrong films. I'll give him credit for not falling in any of the niche groups of internet movie geek, film snob, mainstream joe popcorn, etc. But that's about all the credit I'll give to him. Which category do I fall into?

 Re: 12 Years a Slave
Some truly despicable characters in this movie. I wanted to see Fassbender and Paulson's characters whipped to death. Wasn't totally blown away or anything but it's a very good film. Well-shot and acted.

12 Years a Slave
Well, that was an eye-opener. Powerful film. McQueen impeccably captures misfortune and hardship. Performances are stellar all around. Definitely worthy of its Best Picture nomination. Not as brutal as I expected (even after seeing the Patsey whipping scene), but the sense of wrong and imprisonment and hatred and fear exceeded expectations, and that's why the film excels. With its sheer realism and unhinged faithfulness, it captures an entire movement. They could show this film in schools.

It seemed as if he was a slave for less than 12 years, though.

 Re: 12 Years a Slave
Glad you watched it!! And liked it too, nice review.
Agree it doesn't feel like 12 years, it might have been tough to film that without extending the run time. The book is similar like that, it isn't very thick, the film is a great adaption of it.
