That's because you LIKE the Trek characters. I was not emotionally involved with Trek at all and thus, it was a good movie, not great.

And it's not just the predictable story. Hell, I'm starting to think the story actually isn't really that big of a problem. It's the characters. They're just boring. A film like Star Trek was fairly by the books as well, but it's better than Avatar to me mainly because of the characters. As much as I hate Titanic, the relationship between Jack & Rose at least had romance. Jake and Netyri is just...it's like, they stare at each other twice and then they fuck each others ponytails.

Yes. I agree that's the weakest part of the Avatar. But somehow it didn't bother me at all. The movie is magical... :emo:

I didn't think the characters in Avatar were boring at all. On paper they may have been unimpressive and perhaps not at all noteworthy, but capable actors (Weaver, Worthington, Saldana, Lang, and others) gave them life. The fact that Jake was overall such a go-with-the-flow, nice kind of guy and had--as far as I can remember--no moronic displays of testosterone with anyone was refreshing to me. He seemed like a fairly regular, open-hearted/minded guy. Simple doesn't always mean bad.

Also, I'm at a loss as to how Star Trek's characters were anything special. It was a fun movie, sure, but everyone not named Kirk or Spock was pretty much assigned a quirk/personality trait and that was that.

The Trek folks were lively and ingratiating. The drones in Cameron's movie were dull, dull, dull.

Of all the aspects to get fake-fanboy-defensive about, I think Avatar's complete lack of interesting people would be very much the wrong cause célèbre.

I liked Sigourney Weaver; this has less to do with her character and its one-note of brassy righteousness, and more to do with the fact that I like Sigourney Weaver when she's in ball-busting mode.

Spoiler: show
Then the dumb motherfucker kills her off

I'm not sure if my issues are with Fox, Cameron, or most likely both of them. The film really felt like it was edited by a committee. I hated that horrible narration that would pop in just long enough to explain something they weren't confident audience could pick up on visually.

yoshue is almost completely correct. And it is not the Cameron part that is slightly wrong.

I don't think he vlogged his foolproof plan to capture the giant orange bat. Good thing those Na'vi were too unimaginative to figure out you have to jump on it from above! Granted, they did eventually introdue the confessionals, but there were plenty of times where it felt like lazy storytelling. Or maybe it was just to trim the running time - I heard they originally had scenes that took place on Earth.

One other big issue I had was the noble, helpless savage motif. After Jake forgets to mention that the humans are eventually going to take Hometree, he warns them not to try and fight. Yet his big brilliant solution when he returns on the big bat is to organize and fight. Couldn't they have done this before their home got incinerated? Why do they need a white guy to say they should get the neighboring clans to help, when they all share information through tentacles in their hair?
It was just super unclear why they ever needed Jake. The visual attention to detail shows this took years to make, but the gigantic flaws in the story sure don't.

Possibly the most visually stunning motion picture I've ever seen in theaters (especially with 3D). Avatar isn't as good a film as Titanic on the whole, but it comes fairly close. James Cameron has worked tirelessly on this film and it shows: the planet Pandora is a breathtaking land that one can never take their eyes away from. The actors are all solid, including Sam Worthington, Cameron stalwart Sigourney Weaver and a scenery-chewing (in a good way) Stephen Lang. Acting-wise, the film's best portrayal belongs to Zoe Saldana, who favorably recalls the work of Andy Serkis as Gollum in the LOTR movies and brings humanity and heart to an entirely CGI rendered character. The romance between Jake and Neytiri is surprisingly well-realized and effective; I don't think Cameron was going for the next Jack and Rose here but it works well and gives Avatar its requisite emotional poignancy. This is a film that demands to be seen in a 3D format in theaters, uncomfortable glasses and long-ish running time and all. A

Holy shit! I just came back from the IMAX 3D Avatar and wow just wow. This is the most visually beautiful movie I have ever seen. The colors were insane. The CGI was perfect. The flora and fauna of Pandora was magnificent. The monsters were amazing as hell. The 3D was not in your face at all. It was immersive and sucked you in. You felt like you were on that planet. The mechs and technology that the humans had was brilliant. Amazing stuff.

The performances by the leads i.e. Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen lang were all great. The supporting performances by Giovanni Ribisi and Joel Moore were good too. Michelle Rodriguez was fine as well. All the actors who played the Navi characters Moat, Eytukan and Tsu'tey were good too. The story was not new but it worked for this movie and frankly didn't require anything more complex. The emotional scenes and romantic stuff was great and wasn't over done. Some dialogues were kinda bad but most of it was fine.

The score was beautiful and complemented well with the visuals of the movie.

The last battle was fucking mind blowing and epic.

Absolutely insane movie. I would totally go watch this movie again. It didn't had a lot of action but it was a superb fantasy/sci-fi/adventure movie with a big epic battle at the end and didn't disappoint one bit. I am just glad that I avoided all the tv spots and making of scenes stuff because it would have ruined my experience. The audience were enjoying it as well and lots of people were saying cool and woah at scenes in the movie. It didn't get any clapping in the end but still coming out of the theater everyone was talking positively about the film.

9.5/10 (A+)

Al thought it wasn't explicitly said, the impression I got was that Navi didn't go to war. They had no need to. They were a fundamentally peaceful culture. So the concept of getting everyone together and actually going to *war* was alien to them.

I agree with you about voiceovers, though. Baaaaaad writing, as they were just stating the obvious. They can't be video diaries either, as someone suggested, because the style of talking is completely different and Jake talks in imperfect.
