 Re: Star Trek
the time travel thing is brilliant. Because some events from the series/old movies are now changed, it allows Abrams & co. to not have to stick to the Trek storyline anymore, so although we get the same characters, they can do whatever they want with them.
as for the movie: a shitload of fun. A-

 Re: Star Trek
It's a great way to do a reboot, but its hardly anything original. Back to the Future II and Prisoner of Azkaban did it long before Star Trek. Just like those films, ST time travel idea is just as flawed as them.

 Re: Star Trek
There's no alternate timelines in Prisoner of Azkaban.
And also, Star Trek itself did it long before this movie. "Yesterday's Enterprise", anyone?

 Re: Star Trek
That was my point, For a series of films even where the crew went back in time on two occasions, its kind of silly to believe that old spock wouldn't try and fix what happened.
Seriously lets not talk about the logic of Star Trek. It'll be a puzzle that'll never be solved. Enjoy it for what it is.

 Re: Star Trek
As usual, I find your post nearly incomprehensible.
I was merely stating that Back to the Future II is not the end-all, be-all of alternate timeline science fiction, as you seemed to suggest. It is indeed nothing new, but not just because of that one film.

 Re: Star Trek
And I said there is no reason to argue. What is so incomprehensible about it? I take it you haven't seen First Contact or Voyage home then. The new movie isn't an alternate time line neither. No one has simply gone back to fix it. In The Star Trek Universe, its in their realm of belief that they could. JJ Abrams just chose not to, since it was a reboot. Quote: was merely stating that Back to the Future II is not the end-all, be-all of alternate timeline science fiction, as you seemed to suggest. It is indeed nothing new, but not just because of that one film.
Find where I said that. I gave two examples and said their logic are just as flawed.

just keep moving just keep moving. that seems to be jj abram's strategy to get away with his absurd penchant for cliches and one-liners that he needs to at some point get over (which, considering how it seems he absolutely hates to dwell on anything, maybe he will).
but it's really good though. I totally dug it. I really can't think of a better (non-Pixar) blockbuster in recent memory. I especially liked the black girl and the cute russian twink.

 Re: Star Trek
To all the astro-physicists in the room, I have to ask: If one drop of red matter makes a black hole big enough to eat a planet, wouldn't detonating an eight foot tall sphere of the stuff be a bad idea? It isn't hard to find lapses in logic in the new Star Trek. It's even easier to be swept up in the pure spectacle and infectious camaraderie of the crew. Like the writers previous film Transformers, the film is an absolute delight while watching it, only to leave a sour aftertaste from all that lazy storytelling. How much that hurts the film itself largely depends on how thoroughly one wants to dissect it.

However, unlike Iron Man this movie has a few memorable parts unlike the forgettable Iron Man. The sky diving scene and the scene in the beginning when the random woman is sucked into the silence of space...i get goosebumbs during both scenes.

 Re: Star Trek
I revisited this after seeing TFA twice. I was harsh with my grade of B+ on this. This is a better film than TFA, which I love, and gave an A-. This now gets an A from me. Just about everything in this movie works. I didn't even mind the excessive flares. The casting is amazing.

 Re: Star Trek
It doesn't hold up aswell in repeat viewings, but I still really enjoy this film. Love the opening scene with Chris Hemsworth and to this day it's probably my favorite sequence in the movie. From the music to the editing it's just perfect. The cast is also perfection, especially Quinto and Pine who have some great back and forth. It's fast paced, but not rushed and the action sequences are quite exciting. The only problem I have with the movie besides the constant lens flares popping up everywhere is Eric Bana as the villain. Nero isn't that interesting and the whole drilling's planet plot is kinda lame honestly.
Also, this and STID are better films than TFA.

 Re: Star Trek
I revisited this last weekend and it holds up really well. Quinto and Pine are really good in this and the rest of the cast works really well. Simon Pegg and Karl Urban also provide great supporting and comic roles. The action sequences are really great and graphics still hold up nicely. Nero's arc is the weak link here and it would have been great if he got a redeeming arc in the end.
