That is so true. I hated the first two (but found myself strangely liking them on DVD) so I might actually enjoy this one in theatres! Happened to me with X-Men, third part.
Then there are those of us who recognized X3 as the best of the series right from opening day...[/url]

Excellent review, I totally agree with the sections I didn't cover.

The first 90 minutes are very good. Not very good like the second film, but much better than the first. The final 50 turn to shit. Here's what's wrong with the film and I'm covering a lot of the same ground that others have mentioned already. The film should've been two parts. They should've done what Pirates did. More on that later though.
My problems begin with a certain scene. Up until this point the film was working and the dynamic of having an evil Spider-Man was beginning to click. However, it begins to fail when we see Parker strutting down the street like Travolta did in Saturday Night Fever. See here's my problem. When the first two films were campy in parts and funny, it seemed to be done without effort. Here, it's all a gag going for a laugh. It falls flat on it's face. And the scene later on with Parker dancing like an asshole is embarassing. Not because he's an asshole, but the scene left a bitter taste in my mouth with how it ended. We know Peter is supposed to cross some line, but not like that.
We then move onto the butler encouraging Harry to make the right decision. Could it be made even more obvious that Raimi stole Nolan's Batman? What the fuck? He couldn't let Harry discover the reason how his father his killed and why he should help Peter? He had to have a fucking butler thrown in there?
And then how about that climatic final scene? Could it have been any less interesting? There was no suspense. Forget the horrible CGI that is plagued throughout the entire movie and in the finale here, but there was no money shot. There was nothing exciting. It was Mary Jane falling, big Sandman, and Venom popping up here and there with Harry coming to the rescue. That's it? And to revisit that unintentional camp factor, what the fuck was with the newscaster and the reporter? To say they were not needed at all would be one thing. To say they almost ruin the entire scene would be another. They do in fact pretty much ruin the scene. "The brutality of it all!" ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Give me a fucking break with this hammy dialogue. Even Michael Bay knows how to handle dialogue better. And then to end the whole thing, Sandman just floats away? WOW! What a spectacle. So this brings me back to my first point. This should've been a prelude to Part IV. Instead, there's no window left open for a Part IV, except for that little thing in the jar, but I don't think that means very much.
The idea for 3 would be the Mary Jane/Peter relationship, Peter and Harry and evil Spider-Man. There's plenty of material to work with there. Keep Eddie Brock to a minimum and throw out the Stacy/Brock relationship. Keep Sandman, but have him "go away" at the end of Part III in a much more exciting finale. End the film with the scene at the church with the final scene with Venom or rework it in some way with Venom. That zoom shot on him should've been the final scene. All the relationships could be resolved in Part IV as well as Venom. Instead we're stuck with a film that has a good first half, and a horribly edited last half.
C
I hope Raimi and company come back for a Part IV. If the initial cast and director end the series on this note, they should be ashamed of themselves.
On a side note: The scene with Bruce Campbell was brilliant.

One more thing. The last scene is the most depressing thing I've watched in a long time. There's like a shade of hope and that's it. No closure whatsoever. Pathetic.

Boo haters. This movie is fantastic. The ending I thought was the best. The giant battle felt quite epic and everything was perfectly resolved. Sandman was pretty sweet, Topher Grace was amaaazing. It's quite a funny movie as well. Some scenes do go a bit over-the-top, yes. The newspaper boss had some greeeat parts!! Though, I would NEVER believe Peter would kiss Gwen like that. That was out of place and a little shocking. This isn't an action movie, it's a great dramedy about people.

I thought it fit perfectly as you knew exactly where it was going. If they showed Peter proposing, it would have been out of place and felt a bit selfish, being his best friend just died. It was a nice "everything's OK now" feeling to it.
