Road to Bali is a 1952 comedy film starring Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour. It was released by Paramount Pictures and is the sixth of the seven Road to … movies. It was the only such movie filmed in color and was the first to feature surprise cameo appearances from other well-known stars of the day.

My grade is a solid, high A+++. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I've never laughed at any modern comedy as much as I did with this movie.

I can't wait to see the other "Road" movies... I bet they're all just as awesome.

Actually, seeing this film got me going again on this idea I have of writing and creating an homage film to old comedy-musicals. I want to share the subtle, intelligent humor and awesome dancing/singing talents that graced the screen 50-60-70 years ago with today's audiences.

I think the problem is that today's audiences see a movie in black&white (or that you-know-it's-old-color) and automatically assume it's gonna be corny or whatever. If they would just actually sit and watch the movie, they'd find themselves extremely surprised not only at the great humor but also that there certainly wasn't a lack of innuendo....

But the thing I like about that old innuendo is because it's so subtle. You have to actually use your brain and think about it before getting the double meaning. Nowadays our comedies rely on definitely-not-subtle fart and dick jokes and innuendos that take no brain whatsoever to tap into.

So, yeah... I was laughing my ass off watching this movie and I want to repeat the experience by watching the other "Road" movies.

Oh... and my favorite scene, though one of many (aka the whole movie), is when our heroes are in the jungle and an elephant comes crashing through, and Hope quips, "Boy, those Republicans are everywhere!"

Sure, in writing it doesn't sound too inspired or funny, but in the context of the film and the fact that you're not expecting it just makes you laugh out loud.

Oh, I also loved how there was a fine line between fantasy and reality that was crossed several times, with many quips being made about other movies, actors, and even the studio.... At one point Hope and Crosby are leaning on a log over a steep bank then the log vanishes out from beneath them. Instead of them following the laws of gravity and falling, they're leaning there in mid-air. And to each other they comfort themselves on the fact that "Paramount would never let that happen!"

Okay, yeah, so that's my review.

A+++

Heh - I didn't think anybody on this site watched this kinda movie - I thought at WOKJ, movies were invented in 1992.

Of course it's great, it's Bing and Bob at the height of their comedic powers, telling every cheesey, inside joke and spoof of the day.

I haven't seen them all in a while, but I don't think this one was even the best of the series...

The best thing about those two was the way they used to talk to the screen sometimes, and at about halfway through the movie they'd recap the whole plot up till then for those who were having trouble following it or who came in late. I prefer modern comedies but I've seen some of these on TV and can really appreciate how they were hilarious in their era.

Yeah, I love when characters talk to the screen... Like in Ferris Beuller (the best of all teen flicks)... It really makes you as an audience member feel as though you're really there with them.

The recap of the plot is a funny and cool technique, too. Kinda like a Greek chorus... In fact, that technique was used to a lesser extent in a scene in PotC:DMC, actually.

You know, watching this particular film, I had to wonder if the Two T's (Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio) were somewhat inspired by this film while writing Dead Man's Chest... There were several plot points and humor that shared similarities between the two films--cannibals, a Kraken/giant squid, etc. I was intrigued by the similarities.

So this isn't even the best of the series? Wow, I can't imagine how much more tear-inducing laughter I have in store for me, then, when I finally get a chance to watch the others!
