(Expert phonetics there!) As for the film, it had its fair share of charm and occasional humor, but I found Tea Leoni's character to be both insufferable and poorly written, and some scenes that were obviously aiming for Brooks' quirky/poignant trademark just came off as ridiculous rather than humorous. One of the bigger disappointments of last year. C+
I actually say it
Teeh-ah Lee-oh-nee.
Ive heard it be pronounced both ways.
Most irritating is my tendancy to calle Halle Berry Hall rather than Hall-ay.

I saw this movie on the way home from camp on the bus:
Here's my opinion(sorry, I really dont remember the characters names)
I felt the movie was quite charming, and had its fair share of funny parts. But I felt there were also alot of parts that dragged on. I liked it when she began to learn english, and I started getting emotional at the end. But I had a few problems with the movie at the end. I didn't like the fact that the movie focused so much on Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni's(sp?) relationship but sort of forgot about all that happened between them at the end. I found the spanish daughter to be charming...and I wish we could have learned more about the fat daughter's weight progress, I guess.
Its a decent movie, and a great watch. But the story lags in some parts, and soars in others...looks like SPANGLISH needed a TRANSLATOR!!!!(haha..errhm..)
Grade: B-

James L. Brooks has been better before. In fact, As Good As It Gets is much superior to Spanglish in pretty much any way possible. That is not to say that Spanglish is a bad movie, it is just very uneven and not so successful in its intentions. I have never been a big fan of Adam Sandler, but I think he is an okay actor. However, I did not like his performance in this one. He doesn't seem to be able to pull off a dramatic role, yet. At least not in this film. Paz Vega is the movie's shining star and her enchanting and lively performance certainly elevates the movie to a higher level. Contrary to popular opinion, however, I also enjoyed Tea Leoni's performance. I can understand that many viewers were frustrated by her character, but I think it was meant to be this way and that certainly worked.
The ending of the movie is what disappointed me quite a bit. I realized that the movie took on the subject of culture clash, but the message at the end was somewhat, well, messy, in my opinion and I had hard time understanding some of the choices Paz Vega's character made in the movie.
Overall, it's an enjoyable flick, but I can see why it got no awards attention at all.

Watched this tonight again with my gf, she never saw it. She LOVED it.
It holds up really well, and I stick with my 9.7/10 grade
