Quote:
Gosford Park is a 2001 mystery comedy-drama film directed by Robert Altman and written by Julian Fellowes. The film stars an ensemble cast, which includes Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith, Eileen Atkins, Alan Bates and Michael Gambon. The story follows a party of wealthy Britons and an American and their servants, who gather for a shooting weekend at the English country house, Gosford Park. A murder occurs after a dinner party and the film goes on to present the subsequent investigation into it from both the servants' and the guests' perspectives.

Development on Gosford Park began in 1999, when Bob Balaban came to Altman and asked if they could develop a film together. Altman suggested a whodunit and asked Fellowes to write the script. The film went into production in March 2001 and began filming at Shepperton Studios with a production budget of $19 million. Gosford Park premiered on November 7, 2001 at the London Film Festival. It received a limited release across cinemas in the United States in December 2001, before being widely released in January 2002 by USA Films. It was released in February 2002 in the United Kingdom.

The film was successful at the box office, grossing over $87 million in cinemas worldwide, making it Altman's second most successful film after MASH. It has received multiple awards and nominations, including seven Academy Award nominations and nine British Academy Film Awards nominations.

I really love this movie. It has to be watched more than once to be appreciated, I think. There are so many characters it's difficult to catch everyhting the first time. I usually find Robert Altman a little overrated but this film works. It's a simple plot, but it's about the characters and social classes. The acting is top notch. Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren got the Oscar nominations, but Kristin Scott Thomas and Emily Watson are great also. I think Mirren should have won the Oscar that year. My grade: A.

I saw this movie during a Sneak Preview and hated it. Overlong and boring are the best words to describe this overrated POS. D

Gosford Park is another Robert Altman masterpiece, a movie that, despite Altman having been about 76 years old, can stand next to MASH or (especially) MCCABE & MRS MILLER as a classic.

It only improves the more you watch it, as you notice the endless nuances Altman and Julian Fellowes have packed into this thing.

His career has really been a roller coaster ride, filled with ups and downs, but the high points are like no other.

This film started my hate-affair with Ryan Phillipee, because he tends to ruin otherwise perfectly great movies.

Maggie Smith is excellent in this.

Overall, the film didn't excite me like a few of Altman's other films, but it was still very good.

I use to call this God Awful Park > more as a joke as I think there were 2 or 3 of these British movies out in a year and I was just tired of them.

A solid B+. The whole cast was great, and Mirren and Smith were standouts.

Watched it three times in theatres, and the film filled out and became more robust with each viewing. Technically a who-dunnit, all the small glances, nods, and knowing smiles illuminate a family and class history decades in the making. One of the best movies in this past decade.

Pure madness, I tell you.

It was funny for a while, but can some kind soul please correct the spelling of the title? We all know it's not "Godsford Park."

This thread has me really wanting to rewatch this...and, since I can get it (on dvd!) at the school library, I probably will soon.

FWIW, I am pretty sure I liked it (a lot). I think I kinda had a problem with some of the sound/dialog, but apparently that was intentional...So. I'll watch it again soon. :o

With apologies to NASHVILLE and MCCABE & MRS MILLER, it's probably Altman's best film (at the very least, it's my favorite).

Kypade: Please do see it as soon as you can.

Lecter: Hold off on your 16th viewing of Downfall and give this a look. :shades:

I'll see it if you rent Downfall and give it a try. Deal?
