 Maria Full of Grace
Maria Full of Grace Quote: Maria Full of Grace (Spanish title: María llena eres de gracia, lit. "Maria, you are full of grace") is a 2004 joint Colombian-American film, written and directed by Joshua Marston, who won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. Although the movie depicts rural life in Colombia, it was actually filmed in Ecuador. The title is a triple-entendre: a reference to Mary, the Roman Catholic figure; "grace" is a slang name for heroin; and "grace" could also be the name of the baby.
Lead actress Catalina Sandino Moreno was named Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress in the 77th Academy Awards. She is one of three Hispanic actresses to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, together with Mexican actress Salma Hayek for Frida (2002) and Spanish actress Penelope Cruz for Volver (2006).

Great performance by Catalina Sandino Moreno and a wonderfully executed film. My second straight A of the year.

Haunting. Maria Full of Grace is one of those films that isn't relentless in execution but leaves interpretation up to the viewer. Although, Moreno's performance assures a common feeling of horror among the audience.

I really enjoyed Maria Full of Grace. Though it was a bit slow in the beginning, the middle and the end made up for it. It's not the amazing movie people are saying it is, but it's a damn good film.
8/10 (B+)

A great film, really touching, hard to watch at times, and surprisingly equally, if not more, effective on repeated viewings.
With a top-notch performance by Catalina Sandino Moreno.

Powerful, and filled with amazing performances. Catalina Sandino Moreno is spectacular. The scene at the airport was nerve wrecking for me, and that's when I knew this movie really connected with me. A great story, and I love the tagline for the movie "Based on 1,000 true stories".

What an amazing film! It kept me interested throughout, and at the edge of my seat. Especially the airport scene, I really didn't know what to expect. Moreno gives a great performance, and so do many of the other actors involved. One thing I really liked about this film was the ending, very unexpected, but I loved it. I guess she took Carla's advice to heart. I'm glad I got to see this movie, and its a very touching experience. You can totally relate to Maria's character, and put yourself in her shoes. It is at times unbearable to watch, but I'm glad I watched it because now I know a little more about Spanish.

Just wanted to note that this movie is really really fantastic. I obviously can't know for sure, but I don't think I could really get sick of watching it. I agree with this: "equally, if not more, effective on repeated viewings." One of the few films that doesn't lose any of it's power/entertainment/suspense, etc no matter how often I see it. It's very much like Before Sunset in both those ways: I can watch them both more often than most of this decade's output and never come away feeling the least bit disappointed. I also saw both of em within a couple weeks of each other back in July/August 2004. Maybe that's why...that year was so strong.

This was on HBO last night and I ended up watching the second half.
I was even more impressed by Catalina Sandino-Moreno's performance this time around, if that's possible. But the film remains equally great.

Very good movie. The scene at the airport is very tense, very suspenseful. I liked the storyline a lot, but started losing some interest towards the end. Catalina Sandino Moreno's performance is good, but dareI say it, overrated.

I think it's an interesting subject and a well acted film, but I wasn't blown away. I had some problems like how easily Moreno was let out of customs(We know you're a mule, but we can't x-ray you! I guess we'll just let you go then lol!), and the drug dealers she meets in New York being kind of one noted and stereotypical. Nevertheless, it's more entertaining and gripping than I expected, the scene on the airplane itself is pretty tense. It's a solid film.
