Post Minecraft OW #'s
From Charlie

Looks like $10M+ previews for #MinecraftMovie. Initial audience reception seems okay. Robust $40M+ pre-sales for the weekend, coming in hot with an incredible momentum. Expecting $130M+ weekend.

From DHD

Previews tonight per sources are around $7M+ after starting at 3PM. Conservative projections have risen to $75M+

$40M+ in pre-sales already. Wowsa.

The movie was awful to me lol but I guess I was not the target audience. Will take a 100m+ opener but truly bizarre

Officlal preview number is now at $10.55M.

From Variety: The film is projected to make between $70 million to $80 million in its opening weekend. Some estimates are as high as $90 million, but Warner Bros. is playing it safer and putting it at $65 million

Yeah, going to probably do that by mid day Saturday? Though with an OW of this size legs are going to be a be a big question mark.

I guess we should've seen it coming how popular this game was.

if walkups were to go on overdrive it should be done by morning Saturday for sure. I am especially surprised by rival studio projections.

The studio projections are ridiculous unless its going to totally collapse after OD. Can it be THAT bad?

Even with poor WOM - it should get a $135m OW to 300m

Based on data, I am thinking 45m Friday MINUS previews. Should hit 55m Sat and 41m Sunday for 150m ish OW.

It makes me think what a more fan friendly live action or 3D animated Pokemon movie would do (not Detective Pikachu which still did $54M in 2019 but more like Mario). Feels that it could be massive.

If Minecraft manages $150M+, only 3 out of 29 openers at that level have missed $400M (Spider-man 3 2007, BvsS, and HP7 Pt. 2). There's a rush out here but I don't think at the level of those 3 films so certainly could make a play for that benchmark.

Pikachu had terrible release date as well. Week after endgame was sub optimal.

Yeah this is totally how I thought Detective Pikachu would perform. A live action with Ash would probably be biiiig.

Had 2 weeks since Endgame opened in late April but still point noted, opening that close to a $357M opener ain't a good idea.

If $60M, will be the 3rd biggest first film opening day ever behind only Barbie ($70.5M) and Hunger Games ($67M).

May not go that high unless evening shows go on an overdrive. But should hit 45m+ for TF and 56m for friday including previews. Let us see if it can keep going up even more. By 6PM PST we should know.

Looked up the opening days and the stat would remain the same with Minecraft at #3 biggest original if it gets past IT at $50.4M behind Barbie/Hunger Games.

@Keyser, any early signs on global? Can this make a run for $1B?

its good but nothing crazy. I am seeing 400-450m for now. But Japan and Korea are release few weeks later. Japan was a huge breakout for Mario(100m+). Dont know if it will happen for this movie.

Charlie just said 13-15m pounds in UK for OW. Similar number in AUD for Australia. France is looking at 1.2m admits(opening week as opposed to weekend). Germany Mark has predicted 650K but weather is glorious which is bad for box office. China is looking at 15-17m OW. Mexico around 12-13m OW. Brazil looks meh to me(3m ish). Need to see how rest of Asia/Europe etc does.

Western and Northern Europe 33%
Central and South America 8%
Asia 7%
