Worth bringing this back due to so many mixed signals.

Top 10 bestselling toys of all time (Source: https://moneyinc.com/best-selling-toys/)

10 Monopoly - 275M copies sold
9 Silly Putty -300M copies sold
8 GI Joe - 16M
7 Cabbage Patch $6B in sales
6 Rubik's Cube 650M copies sold
5 Hot Wheels 4B copies sold
4 Lego 320B blocks sold
3 Barbie 3B sales
2 Pokemon 440M units
1 Video games 93B sales

Considering Pixar/Disney have milked their Cars franchise for two decades off of brands like Hot Wheels makes me think an inventive movie there for kids with some type of adult appeal could be huge.

A well known live action Pokemon (not Dr. Pikachu) is also just waiting to print $$$.

Hot Wheels could work if the CGI is innovative.

Pokémon too - just not as “small” as Detective felt.

I think the marketing is what has changed rather than what type of movie is in demand. Disney and WB have both continued to operate under the assumption that people will see movies because they are connected to other movies they liked. But now "must-see" movies are all about gaining internet points rather than keeping up with a series. The Marvels could easily turn this around and go full-on "this one is for us" or something ... but Disney is probably too shook right now to understand why its box officr empire no longer exists.

Originality and quality also still matter pretty significantly. People won't just see bad serialized franchise movies anymore when they can get that at home.

Also, we saw 10 years ago female audiences could anchor $150M+ OWs and $400M+ movies yet still see a slow crawl of movies greenlit to see a Barbie $170M OW now. There's so much $$$ on the table by serving to underserved demos as Sound and Barbie show.

I think within 5 years we will also see a $300M+ movie driven predominantly by Latino/Hispanic cast/audience in the domestic market. They are becoming the biggest moviegoing audience.

I don't think its a coincidence that movies like Coco, Encanto and Turning Red have resonated on social as much as they had. Encanto 2 will be a major box office event when that gets released.

Maybe the next craze is no craze. Films success no longer built on what franchise or IP they're on. If it looks good, it gets buzz. If it doesn't, it flops. This would be the true hair metal ----> grunge rejection of the 2010s style.

Well we know now we'll get a flood of concert movies, all of which will probably make less than 1/3 of Eras!

I also read a travel stat that interest from GenZ and Millennial travelers for Japan has gone up a whopping 1300% between 2019 and 2023. I feel like we are on the cusp of some major mega blockbusters and growth for Japanese films this decade.

We saw the return of concert movies, musicals, adult skewing movies, biopics and original fare come back 2023.

I'm feeling 2024 may be the return of romantic movies as a genre.

-Anyone But You seems like it will leg out possibly to $60M+.

-Challengers also just released its poster and I'm feeling this has breakout written all over it. I wouldn't be shocked if Challengers actually starts the summer and outopens The Fall Guy. Poster link: https://deadline.com/2024/01/zendaya-ch ... 235693809/

Project Artemis starring Scarlett Johansson/Channing Tatum is a romcom coming out in July.

Think Ordinary Angels could overperform in the heartland as well.

Joker will play as a romantic movie even if R rated horror.

Feels like the genre is ready for a rebound.

Although the biggest movie was still IP in Wonka so far I feel pretty good about this. This holiday season felt like one where there was 7 or 8 viable movies and you kind of read out the google descriptions to your dad "What's Anyone But You? Ok pass.. what's the Iron Claw about?" and you picked between them.

It Ends With You could have been another blockbuster for the ladies. Especially on Galentine's Day. Yet instead it feels like it is being dumped. Blake Lively is in the news every day hanging with Taylor, but they both seem more interested in promoting Deadpool than the movie coming out next month. So weird.

Unorthodox, non traditional takes on existing IP, especially from 1990-early 2000s.

A true Home Alone 3? Gold mine. Austin Powers 4? Yes. Josh Hartnett back in leading roles? Make it happen. Legally Blonde 3 being a crossover with Barbie 2 set around Christmas? RIP Force Awakens,.

Even if expected for the holiday films, I feel like we've been seeing more notable leggy runs post pandemic (TGM, Barbenheimer, ABY, Puss In Boots, Migration, etc.).

Here are the current multipliers for some notable late Nov / Dec movies:

Anyone But You $85,107,000 $6,000,344 14.2
Migration $116,178,000 $12,453,275 9.3
The Iron Claw $34,984,040 $4,868,370 7.2
Wonka $210,741,297 $39,005,800 5.4
Godzilla Minus One $56,418,793 $11,419,975 4.9
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom $123,650,802 $27,686,211 4.5
Hunger Games $166,350,594 $44,607,143 3.7
The Boy and the Heron $45,520,326 $13,011,722 3.5

Godzilla Minus One almost certainly could have done $70M if they kept it around for a 6X multiplier. Even for one holiday season, Wonka has the 4th best (not including award expanders), with a 5.4X multiplier.

This could be in the next decade, but envision movies primarily crafted by AI, including their plots.

---------

Also, while Viking and Scandinavian folklore and mythology have been extensively depicted (also, Greek, Roman, Chinese), there's a plethora of other cultures throughout history waiting to be explored. There are likely countless heroes, villains, and storylines from various cultures that could captivate mass audiences if presented effectively. Moana being a prime example.

Well the Horizon trailer came out. If it is a breakout we'll get a flood of westerns. Going to come down to quality but it looks decent enough for both films to probably do at least $75M+.

Seems comedy is coming back in 2025 significantly.

New Scary Movie announced to start filming this fall.

Aziz directed Seth Rogen/Keanu film.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have a musical comedy scheduled for July 2025 with Kendrick Lamar?

Minecraft with Jack Black in Super Mario's April spot.

M3Gan 2 in May (plays like a horror comedy)

Naked Gun remake with Lesley Nielson in July 2025.

Hopefully the cast Ortega and Barrera in Scary Movie 5 idea actually happens!
