Post Lord of the Rings (2026)
Peter Jackson and team are going back to Middle Earth in 2026.

The first film, which will center on the character of Gollum, has Andy Serkis set to star and direct. Will be written by Jackson / Walsh.

How will it do?

I feel like the series has been burned a bit by the prequels but there would be genuine interest in a Gollum movie. Feeling $250M+ is very doable with inflation.

I think the Amazon series hurts but PJ's style is unique and could have appeal. Would rather he did Zelda in LOTR style though.

This will do worse than the Hobbit movies for sure.

The Hunt for Gollum sounds like a Fantastic Beasts movie. So I expect the gross to be closer to those than the Lord of the Rings or Hobbit movies.

Ummmmm what

"the hunt for Gollum"? You mean a whole movie about...... Gandalf running around looking for Gollum? Really? Because the Rings of Power already showed that using footnotes for glorified fanfic only produces a boring flop no one cares about and ends up losing hundreds of millions despite relentless marketing.

And stretching out the Hobbit into three movies did make money but aside from the scenes featuring Smaug were a huge downgrade from LOTR so we all know PJ ain't what he used to be.

Also, Andy Serkis directing? This reeks of behind the scenes favours and ego

I smell disaster

Or, a conspiracy: could this be BS designed to bump up Warner Discovery's price in the event of a (rumoured) sale to another company?

This is a bad idea, imo. I expect this to do between $80m and $140m. This ain't the big return to New Zealand and the Middle Earth world that WB thinks it is, The Hobbit already did that and it underwhelmed. This is scraping the barrel even more and there's not much left to scrape. General audiences have moved on and only fans will be interested. I mean, it helps that LOTR fanhood is now quite broad but its popularity with GA will be highlighted. It's like those Star Wars series; average folk don't care. But they cared when TFA came out. Mainstream interest wanes so very quickly.

I misread it originally and thought PJ was directing. Serkis version will probably just be a CGI fest. Though by making Venom 2 and a random Nicholas Sparks style movie Breathe he's done more outside the other Jungle Book movie than I thought.

If its a search for Gollum movie then it must be about when Gandalf and Aragorn were searching for Gollum after Gandalf told Frodo to hide the ring, does that mean that Ian Mckellen and Viggo comibg back?
