5/31-6/2 weekend (yikes)
3.3m Friday for Garfield, 3m for Furiosa according to Deadline.
Furiosa having a sub-60% drop would have been decent with a 40m+ opening.

No. No. Noooo. This wasn't meant to happen!!
This was meant to be a free weekend for Garfield to make the dough it didn't make last weekend. ffs

Not surprised at the bad Furiosa hold. It's not a pleasant film to sit through.

Never understood why people thought Garfield would break out. It will end up below IF at this rate.

Re: 5/31-6/2 weekend (yikes)
So maybe we're looking at these for total grosses based on DHD 3day estimates?
POTA $153M If $97M Fall Guy $90M Garfield $78M Furiosa $72M
Rough month so good that the box office is turning a page today.

It's an established IP getting the animated CG treatment, a summer release, Chris Pratt voicing, and it's a sarcastic cat that could've been the zag to the usual animated character zigs. Also the first major kids movie of the summer. I'm very disappointed by its performance. I thought it would do $200m total.

If should get to 100m if it keeps having good drops until Inside Out. Even the Strangers is having decent legs.

Fall Guy and If doing $100M+ would be great to at least bookend May on.

Re: 5/31-6/2 weekend (yikes)
Every May movie is a money-loser, even Apes. This is pandemic numbers without the pandemic. Really, really bad for the future of the film industry. They depend on getting big tentpole hits at the box office to offset costs. Like, has there ever been a May where none of the releases turned a profit in their theatrical runs?
The only studios doing moderately ok this year will be WB (Dune 2, Kong/Godzilla and Joker 2), Universal (DM4 and Wicked) and Disney (Inside Out 2 and Deadpool/Wolverine). Soon I bet those three will have absorbed all the other studios. Just like how during the low period of the 2000s, the music industry went from six major labels to only three. Digital piracy and unbundling albums with iTunes was to the music industry as streaming is to the film industry. Massive paradigm shift that will put a ton of people out of work.

Re: 5/31-6/2 weekend (yikes)
Garfield will make money, it’s already at almost 3x its budget.
Apes needs 400m WW to break even at least so it might not lose that much money.

Re: 5/31-6/2 weekend (yikes)
Apes and Garfield should be fine.
The mistake from the studios is ballooning budgets and the paucity of big titles. Fall Guy and Furiosa were never going to be huge tentpoles - just that they were given prime release dates they couldnt live up to.
The Fall Guy making $90-110m in February would have looked pretty good (budget aside).

Re: 5/31-6/2 weekend (yikes)
Garfield is to 150 WW already on 60 budget. I'm surprised Planet of the Apes is flirting with non profitability, these budgets are too high.
