tho I don't have a problem with netflix. it's no different than tv. they just (sometimes) make better tv movies.

I just don't know why Disney or any other studio would even care about being in the brick & mortar movie theater business at this stage of the game.
The only majors who could even dream of competing in exhibition are the same ones who are focused on direct to consumer streaming, which is itself a hedge against the inevitable contraction (if not outright collapse) of the theatrical business.

I think for the other studios, the theater business is probably not a great move. Disney has so many huge hits at the box office that I could see them wanting to get every penny instead of sharing any of it with theater owners. Now for the other studios, they have to be careful. They do not have the amount of guaranteed box office smash hits like Disney. Operating a movie theater is not cheap. Electricity, air conditioning, projection technology, etc. I think you only go into that business as a studio if you know there will be good attendance from audiences. Disney is the only studio that can really say they are sitting on a gold mine compared to the others.

While I agree but can't the laws be then changed to allow studios to not provide theatrical subscription? Maybe a lower scoped law. Otherwise yeah this will be VERY VERY bad for the industry and consumers.

How will this affect, say, A24 films being released in theatres? All I want is to be able to watch films like Midsommar and The Lighthouse in a movie theatre.

I dont see this making a huge difference. I could see Disney opening premium movie experiences in major cities. but wont just release movies in their own plexes. I could Disney creating next gen Augumented Reality driven movie experience that will cost $50 a pop that will show movies in 16K where audience can be part of the experience.
Warner Bros also have enough assets to follow them. Not sure about the rest.

Re: Paramount Decree Likely To Be Overturned i.e. MONOPOLY B
Yeah, theaters are different from streaming in a number of ways. Theaters are supported by a diverse portfolio of films. It mitigates risk, if one movie isn’t a hit another is likely to make up for it. If Disney had their own multiplexes, what would they have been playing the past couple months? I agree it might work for a few locations in major markets, but for smaller theaters it doesn’t make sense. For A24 it will still depend on screen averages, there could be some negative impact and favoritism if studios buy chains, and block bookings would definitely be bad, but it would still be bad business to play a movie to empty screens when you could be selling a new A24 release.
