Re: Early Friday (Venom not box office poison) If you exclude Beauty and the Beast, 41m is the second highest opening for a "musical" (I know it's not an actual musical) ever behind High School Musical 3.
It's also the third highest OW for a music drama after Straight Outta Compton and 8 Mile, and highest for a non-urban music drama.
So this is definitely at the very high end for its genre.

Plus, I've seen many theaters that have already have almost full at AMC and Regal and it has the holiday weekend (softer than expected Sunday drop is in store). I seriously doubt it will fall below Mamma Mia 2!. Plus, 42% of the audience was 50+ and 86% of the audience was 25+. That shows a sign that it wasn't all just Lady Gaga fans. If you're comparing this to MM2, wrong. That movie had 83% female while this one has 66% female AND it had an A in Cinemascore. Stay positive.

I think the key factor is that it has two things that have been lacking from Hollywood films lately (and which Hollywood used to be world-renown for): genuine romance and genuine star power. Gaga and Cooper's chemistry was obvious from the trailers, the promo they did together, and all the reviews highlighted that. A far cry from the 50 Shades movies. And then Cooper is one of the preeminent male movie stars of the day and someone who actually feels like a real Hollywood movie star. And Gaga is new to acting but she's one of the few legitimate music icons of her generation of artists.
