Mr and Mrs Smith DID OPEN with $50M!
Say what you like about this summer, but exciting it ain't. And not only that, it's hardly light-hearted. Last year, you had Shrek 2 as a "family" comedy and Van Helsing as an unintentional joke, but this year, we're having the gloomy SW3, to be followed by a gloomy Batman, to be followed by a gloomy War of the Worlds. Fun.
In between, I think we need a breather. Something like, where to sexy people try to kill each other. But try to kill each other in a fun, sexy way!
And so it should be that we're given the opportunity to see that!
Total hotness!
The marketing has been great; the trailer is playing effectively, and more importantly, the usual gossiping and rumour mills are actually of direct benefit to this film (unlike, say, Cruise and Holmes, heh). Why? Jolie and Pitt are a married couple in this film. It's almost as if the film provides us with a glimpse of the next step in their relationship. Sick? Yes. Voyeuristic? Yes?A big draw? Oh God yes.
Irrespective of its legs (discussion of totals, etc. belongs in some other thread), I think the opening might well be bigger than many anticipate. There's quite a bit of demand and anticipation, certainly more so than for last year's Stepford Wives. I'm mentioning Stepford Wives, btw, because Kidman was originally scheduled to play Angelina's part. Man, I'm glad she dropped out
Ok, so what do you think of my opening weekend prediction? Do you agree/disagree? And if so, why?

Jolie is box-office poison of the worst kind. Other than that, I would expect this movie to be big, but really Jolie brings bad luck to pretty much all movies she stars in. I expect it to open with around $35 million.

Didn't you just say something about predicting so high that people are disappointed even by good results?

That's true. It's one of the strange things about her. She continues to be a high-profile name, and get big roles, even though she hasn't really been in a well-performing film since Tomb Raider (Shark Tale doesn't count).
I hope Pitt can make up for her.

There's a difference between predicting a $450m grossing film, and a $50m opener. Only 2 films have ever grossed $450m. How many have opened with $50m?

The marketing has really improved and picked up. I think it will do very well, however I only see an opening around 40m. The legs will be strong though for a summer action film as this has much more comedy.

I don't know under or over 50m but I do expect it to do better than I earlier thought it wuold, based on new TV ads that are better than the trailer.
However in the ads they pretty much give away a 3rd act twist. In whiteout if you don't mind things being spoiled.
The implication in the TV ads is that Mr and Mrs Smith form a truce and join forces to take down a bad guy. They have a shot of the bad guy saying "It's the Smiths! Send everyone." and another shot of Pitt and Jolie appear to be fighting side by side against others.

why not? I'm in. If it doesn't hit $50M it will only be a few million off.

Thank you all. I shall love all of you for it.
But, dolcevita slightly more than the rest
One thing that I find so appealing about this film is that it screams summer time. This is the only "summer"-like film amongst the crop of releases. Obviously, this is just my opinion, but the others look so dark and depressing.
