I do not believe Black Panther will follow the usual 2.8 multiplier. It has that type of following where people will keep seeing it because they think it's a good movie and because they feel they're doing good in the world by seeing it, much like how Wonder Woman managed a 4.0 multiplier. Having said that, I just cannot see this flick making $500m. Its multiplier won't be that good, but I think it could reach a 3.0. It all depends how big its opening is.

Expectations are beginning to creep too high, I feel, and anything below Deadpool is going to be considered, wrongly, disappointing. This happens regularly with Marvel films, and they're typically viewed as "underwhelming" upon release even when they open to incredible numbers.

Fandango doesn't help as they often report record advance ticket sales that don't translate to record opening weekends.

I believe it'll do $125 million+, and that it could approach/hit $150 million, but I'm not going to consider an opening of, say, $120-130 million disappointing in the slightest -- it'd be quite remarkable.

Love hearing people use the term multiplier. I was very likely the first to start using it in online forums. Back in the 1990s there was one major forums for boxoffice prognosticating - Time Pathfinder boards. I began using ‘multiplier’ in the context of boxoffice and saw its use spread across that forum then further on to other forums (boxoffice reports, boxofficemojo, etc.). Lol

Agreed with Corpse. People are overreacting to social media hype. Anything above $100m is huge for this movie.

I don’t think we should get too carried away on the opening. The NBA All-Star Weekend may not be that popular anymore, but it will take away some business on Saturday and Sunday night.

In an unprecedented move the league moved all-star weekend to Tuesday n Wednesday so that the players could all go n see BP. They didn't want to risk the embarrassment of 90% of the players boycotting all-star wknd.

I'm sure the movie is good, but as much as I'm looking forward to it I'm not expecting this to be best movie ever. People do seem to love over hyping these Marvel movies and I remember that really hurting my initial viewing experiences when I saw TWS and CW. I'll definitely go into it with my expectations in check just like I did with Homecoming and Ragnarok.

It is not only a Marvel movie (though I agree those are always over-hyped), but it is also an opportunity for all white people that still feel guilt over slavery to write this up as a classic on the level of The Dark Knight. Just like how Wonder Woman was the perfect opportunity for all male liberals to show how progressive they are. So that's what happens nowadays. The general public are told that average movies are masterpieces, and because of this they are forced to also say they like them (or forever be a racist/misogynist etc.). Same happened with Moonlight.

Why do you automaticaly assume that it is not, sight unseen? See, I have seen it, I have no feelings of guilt over slavery and the film is fucking great, just like the previous two by Ryan Coogler.

There is a precedence of Marvel's solo-hero films being average. Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor, Iron Man. All average or worse. And since this is a prediction site, I don't assume, I wholeheartedly predict that the general public will be told that Black Panther is a masterpiece and because of this they will be forced to also say they like it. And it's happening already. Baa Baa ;)

Don't know how many of them are legit but there are over 4,000 Go Fund Me pages for ticket purchases for schools/Kids/Families with the #BlackPantherChallenge

So far the majority of them have been funded and a ton of stars have paid for whole requests on there own.

So the people that want to see Black Panther are too poor to buy a ticket? lol.

So just like Man of Steel and its Walmart promotion, the reception to the Black Panther opening will need to be kept in check considering this artificial bump in ticket sales. That is providing they actually spend the money on tickets. I suspect it started innocently enough, and when people realised that all the #BlackPantherChallenge campaigns were getting funded, they saw it as an easy way to generate some money for other things.

Big difference between MOS though, that was just for limited advanced screenings. From what I remember they didn't sell out these promotions either.

Go Fund me has been pretty good lately in cleaning up BS campaigns. Looks like most of them are targeting Monday the 19th for showings

This is also interesting... http://www.bptakeover.com/

From what I remember, the studio bought $10m in tickets, gave them to Walmart to do whatever with, but the $10 was already counted towards any gross.

The hype machine is fully in motion. Would not be shocked at a Hunger Games-sized opening.

This seems to have the best reviews of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Could be legitimately be the best superhero film since The Dark Knight and among the best of all time.

So glad I drafted it!

Me too. One of the reasons I drafted it is because I can never lose. If it fails, I'm kind of pleased. If it does really well, I do well in the draft.

65 fresh reviews during the first 24 hours with no negative reviews. It can't hold up to a 100% rating can it? Has any movie done that on the RT site?

I thought Lady Bird has 100% rating still

Lady Bird finally got a rotten review after like 180 fresh ones. Now Paddington 2 is the freshest movie ever, I believe.

Meanwhile,

Outpacing Hunger Games and Beauty and the Beast presales is kind of insane.

Can't believe we may be looking at possibly the 3rd highest grossing Marvel Film of all time that may even come as close as domestic 75 Mil short of what Infinity War may make.
