 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
R1's $348m = 4th biggest 11 day gross ever...
Edit: BOM must be wrong with this one... Saturday sure wasn't worth $46m...

 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
LOL, if Sing behavees similar to Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked from 2011, it will be at $180+ million by the end of its second weekend.

 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
A Monster Calls is a film with commercial potential I believe will definitely suffer because of the studio's absolute insistence on releasing it in the deadly crowded heart of Oscar season.
Impressive start for Julieta, on the other hand, considering the glut of gold-derby hopefuls, films by name-brand art-house directors, etc.

Live by Night might have fared better in the summertime, positioned as a stylish alternative for adults in the vein of Public Enemies or The Great Gatsby.

 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
So, in conclusion:
Sing is as huge as expected. Passengers has recovered and could still theoretically hit $100M domestic. Why Him? outopening Assassin's Creed is moderately embarrassing for Fox.
Very strong debut for Fences (and obviously its muted NY/LA debut was not a promising indicator). La La Land's expansion numbers are VERY impressive so far, I wonder how it will hold with awards noms and 1,000+ theaters.
Hidden Figures' limited numbers bode well for a smash performance in wide release. Solid for Patriots Day and Silence, though Live by Night and A Monster Calls...not so much.

Rather Hilarious how RO is steadily going to be the biggest Ticket Seller of the decade after SW7, JW and TA rather quietly.

I don't know if it would have done great anywhere really. But going wide on January 6th doesn't seem bad after nothing new for a couple weeks. I knew it wouldn't do well in limited release.

 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
Good numbers for Rogue One, Sing, La La Land and Fences. Why Him is also having a decent start, but Assassins Creed and Passengers are duds eventhough the latter had a nice recovery yesterday.

 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
That Passengers recovery on Xmas is pretty impressive (comparatively, obviously it could have done better). If Xmas ends up being a better indicator of it's final total rather than the rest of the opening week, it could wind up with a less disappointing total (like 100-115M).

 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
Terrible for Live by Night. The only comparison based on (limited release) I can think of is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and it did less than half as much as that. Not saying it will go that low though.
Unless its WOM is like The Accountant/Argo/The Town, I wouldn't be surprised if it failed to crack $20M in its 4 days (based on its soft numbers in limited release) especially when its releasing against Patriots Day, which looks like it will do similar numbers to Lone Survivor.

 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
Didn't even see that Live By Night number until you mentioned it. Why even do a limited release if you know you have a turd? I do think general audiences are probably more into Affleck than critics/arthouse audiences, so there's a chance it will do better nationwide, but that's still embarrassing.

 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
Pretty solid performance from Rogue One. It's definitely not the pop culture milestone that The Force Awakens was last year, so pulling in nearly $100 million over the four-day weekend after burning off so much demand already is quite impressive.
Sing is off to a terrific start, and it will clean up between now and next Monday.
Passengers is putting up predictably ho-hum business, although $30 million in six days isn't terrible in light of the combination of weak reviews and Rogue One's big performance. I'm sure that news outlets will be quick to lay the blame on the stars, but the hit that its buzz took from the weak reviews that was more responsible for hampering it.
Why Him? did okay. I think there was more potential with the concept and stars on hand, but the trailers looked thoroughly mediocre and the reviews weren't kind.
Assassin's Creed had a poor opening, as expected. I'm kinda baffled as to how so much talent got involved with it in the first place.
Fences is doing well for a serious drama. Awards buzz should carry it through a solid run.
I'm a bit bummed that Moana isn't making more money, but a soft performance was inevitable with Sing's strength factored in. On the bright side, it does still have what should be a very good week coming up.
La La Land is off to a fabulous start in its latest expansion.
Hidden Figures did really well in its limited debut. I really didn't expect it to be in line to break out, but it's certainly setting itself up for a terrific run once it enters wide release.
Live by Night got off to a very weak start yesterday, but the writing was on the wall in the face of surprisingly tepid reviews. It always looked like more of a commercial play anyway, so theoretically it's not yet completely screwed for its wide launch in January.

 Re: 4 day weekend estimates
Ew @ Star Wars and the pathetic lack of competition Hollywood has scheduled against it.
Passengers - what a farce. Waste of money, time, talent to produce such a dumb show.
Poor Moana, but Frozen was lightning in a bottle, and that isn't likely to come again quick.
Plus, the weekend after Thanksgiving nullifies Thanksgiving, I mentioned that a long, long time ago.
The only true help is Christmas dailies that are most of the time boosted without much downside.

Sorry to hear you didn't like it, but I'd be interested to read your opinion of where you felt it went wrong. I agree with your opinion on some other sci-fi movies such as Terminator 3, Elysium, and Speed Racer, so I'm surprised at your reaction to Passengers. Can you take a minute to post your review in the review thread?

That Patriots Day PTA doesn't seem thrilling to me. Terrorism genre isn't in high demand right now for obvious reasons so I could see this being a very modest performer.

It's not much lower than Lone Survivor's PTA in 7 theaters vs. 2. Seems like a good sign to me, but I dunno.
