I think his name is much more worth than $10m...
The same movie with the same cast directed by Howard Deutch or Brian Levant would probably open to $6-7m...

 Re: Weekend Estimates 01/16
H8 was hurt greatly by the release of DVD quality rips of the screener on line. The Revenant will face the same problem. These were not poor quality cams that hit the internet before theater release. They were DVD quality copies according to many blogs on line, add in the fact that both are drama/acting movies and the need for the big screen is reduced.
The push for votes for awards is admirable, however it should not come at the expense of revenue. The fact that so many in Hollywood cannot get off their ass and go to a movie in the theater is sad. I am not talking about the handful of true A listers who may find it just too much trouble to venture out for a quiet evening, I am talking about the 95% of people who receive these DVDs who the general public wouldn't recognize if they sat next to them.
I have thought the process is stupid for years. Why on earth would you allow digital copies of your movie out into the public before wide release. Screeners need to end, maybe this year will make the Weinsteins wake up.

but yeah you're right. i think it shows too that having a bonafide star in his last two films (Pitt/Leo) helped a lot. Not to mention the films themselves were just more appealing than this was ever going to be. I didn't see anything near the promotion for this film as the previous two, so that didnt help. Also, as entertaining as those films are on a certain level they are morally bankrupt on another level which tends to turn off many moviegoers attracted by the stars.

 Re: Weekend Estimates 01/16
Hateful Eight was overshadowed by Star Wars. It had horrible marketing in the final stretch, far too long of a run time, and the inane decision to release it limited before going wide.

I don't know what kind of expectations everyone had... I think close to $30m in 5 days of limited and 5 days of wide release is nothing to sneeze at...

 Re: Weekend Estimates 01/16
http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/de ... ration-dvdboth downloaded more than half a million times before xmas alone. Now at well over 2 million times each. Not to mention the tons of sites that stream them on Kodi not included in those numbers, that has to hurt revenue.

 Re: Weekend Estimates 01/16
After the hype that hit the Internet, and the great openings behind Django and Bastards, I expected more, yes. I do suppose a lot of Tarantino's fan base are the people who would just as much rather download the movie than watch it at the theaters. So maybe there is something to this piracy theory.

 Re: Weekend Estimates 01/16
TH8 is doing great for the kind of movie it is.
The argument of having pirated copy released still doesn't hold. Do you really think that 90% of the people who downloaded a pirated copy would have actually seen the movie in theaters?
Also look at the numbers for TH8 and The Revenant do they look like disappointing in any sense. I think movies like X-Men and The Expendables are the ones that got hurt with pirated copies.

You are looking at it the wrong way. Basters and Django were outliers, not the norm for Tarantino and they were so thanks to Pitt and DiCaprio. Basterds also was a very easy sell marketing-wise (Brad Pitt kicking Hitler's ass), while Django had the Oscar buzz at the right moment. The Hateful Eight has NONE of that.

I just don't get that SISTERS total ($61.7m) - there wasn't a single laugh in the preview (at least for me)...

Fey and Poehler are undeniable draws. Baby Mama adjusts to $72.5 million and it did it solely on their starpower.

 Re: Weekend Estimates 01/16
Using adjusted numbers, eh? It will probably not go far below Jackie Brown adjusted anyway. Kill Bill, Jackie Brown and now The Hateful Eight will probably all be in the $60-100 million range when adjusted.

 Re: Weekend Estimates 01/16
If TH8 would have more awards buzz then I guess it would have had better legs and still eek out $75m-$80m total, its just doesn't have anything outside of QT's name right now. As it was mentioned somewhere, if this was not his movie it would have tanked completely.

His fanbase is significantly bigger today than it was when JB or Kill Bill was released. Wait a second, don't the numbers of The Hateful Eight pretty much show that everything you assumed above is just wrong?

Don't overlook that The Hateful Eight simply isn't as good or accessible as QT's last two films. Sometimes it's that simple, shit sinks.

Yes. I think that the type of movie also impacts a lot of BO plus the negative publicity around QT won't help TH8 much.

That is close to Avatar's 3rd weekend number than I ever imagined. I don't think 4th weekend record is a lock from this number.
