After The Perfect Guy and the Shyamalan movie came out, everything besides the Martian has died.

Specktre, Peanuts, FloppingJay, Mediocre Dinosaur, Neverest, the Wake amongst the high profile casualties.

Also, Pants, Ember Trials, Black Mess, Crimson Valley, Path of Spies, Steve Unemployed and the barren wasteland of the latter two October weekends. The Night Before is also a massive flop, as is presumably Victor Frankenstein.

So much for #2015bitch. Of course Star Wars is going to make a billion dollars to "compensate" and that would be NOT great.

Having all the money go to one sellout franchise from a sellout producer from a sellout studio is a fail for the industry and for humanity in my book. Granted I haven't seen most of the movies, but I'm sure most of them deserved a lot more money than they ultimately got.

Nothing lasts forever, and when it comes to B.O. trends, an entire calendar year. I'm just surprised that even some of the better reviewed and marketed films had weak openings. Outside of Star Wars, it will be interesting to see what film re-ignites the box office in a big way. At least Creed is looking to be strong through the holidays.

There used to be a time when the entire year could sustain good box office. Was 2009 the last one? Might not see a year like that again. And even then. that pales to the early 2000s.

Creed is gonna save the month.

While I agree that there have been a lot of disappointments recently that really have me puzzled, the fall months are hardly the worst months of the year. March, July and August are actually the only months where 2015 didn't end up in the top 3 highest grossing ever, with November likely joining them.

September was the highest grossing ever and October was the 2nd. So maybe the issue is really that studios are putting too many movies with potential (adult movies?) in months that have limitations on attendance.

As for November's disappointments, I really have no clue why, besides that people just weren't interested in these installments or that the marketing was mediocre. (Spectre and MJ2)

As you see, we are even with 2013, which is the biggest year. It is a little behind 2012, but that December was terrible, so it went down with a wimper. With Star Wars, and some potential big hits, it is still possible that this year can still hit 11 billion. Stars Wars should perform at a record breaking pace to forget any under performances of the November films. Still, I agree with BK that the last few months were very disappointing.

I must say, though, I laughed at "Neverest" and "Black Mess". But "Steve Unemployed" landed with a thud.

Also: The Night Before a massive flop? It opened to $10 million on a $25 million budget. It will probably make $32-38 million domestically. Massive flop??

Except I wouldn't even say it is very disappointing. Many studios dream of numbers like this. A $70 million 5-day opening would probably still give it a $200+ million total.

Of course, but that's not the point. From the moment this movie was in development, it had so much potential. Dinosaurs have to be one of the easiest sells there is. Sub 60 over a normal 3-day would be very disappointing for a Pixar movie, and sub 70 million over 5 is even more so. 200 million is nothing for Pixar. It ought to be doing 300 as the big Pixar movie of the holidays. Incredibles and Monsters Inc. both adjust to well over 300 million without 3D, this film really ought to be opening to their level, especially considering Inside Out managed 90 million 3 day 5 months ago. This film had literally everything going for it on paper, absolutely no reason it shouldn't have done better than Frozen. But that looks unlikely now, which is a huge disappointment. It's reviews are not amazing, but they are nowhere near bad. They are certainly good enough to make it a prime selection over the holiday.

The fall only had issues because they crammed too many adult films into such a tight corridor. Bond is doing Bond numbers (Skyfall was an anomoly). Hunger Games is puzzling but thats what it is.

The Martian, Bridge of Spies, The Intern, The Visit, Black Mass, Hotel Trans 2, Perfect Guy - all did very well (or incredible in the case of Martian and HT2) for Sep/Oct releases.

TFA is going to explode to monsterous numbers so that will singlehandedly get the year over $11b. Though granted the year should have done $11.3B if it was not for a weak July/Aug corridor.

This year wasn't as dire as BK sets it out to be, but there's DEFINITELY an element of underwhelming there to merit a thread like this. Expectations for the year have gone down based on what people thought earlier on for the year that was going to break records by a margin. #2015blah definitely has a bit of merit though.

Yeah there has been a lot of well received movies in the last few months that didn't do well and yes inflation has made the months more inclined to get into top three we just can't say that #2015bitch is happening either. Not only that the movies that are disappointing they are doing weak numbers.

I still cannot believe October 2015 was the second best all time. It had quite a few disappointments.

September and October at least had depth (thats why they are strong months overall). Sadly July/Aug didnt have any depth and hence deflated the year.

But yeah - its been a year of big HIGHs and terrible lows.

I wouldn't say it's ending on a whimper because Star Wars is going to be so fucking massive, but this year definitely could've been better. October was such a clusterfuck of a month with quality films disappointing left and right and outside of Creed/Peanuts breaking out November wasn't much better either. Christmas, also looks really weak this year aswell. I mean other than Star Wars and maybe some of the holdovers the openers don't seem appealing at all.
