Is Good Dino In Trouble Now?
There are several reasons for the disappointing opening weekends of Spectre and Mockingjay. Franchise fatigue, unappealing advertisements, etc... I think the biggest reason is that they are #NotStarWars though. The audience is very fickle right now, waiting for the most mega of mega blockbusters makes everything else seem less exciting.
Dinosaur has also had a lot of behind the scenes drama that has lessened the excitement compared to a normal Pixar movie. With Inside Out, people knew they were gonna great experience they had never seen before. Wit Dinosaur l, we just want it to be Good.
So I'm thinking Dino comes in at under $70m for the 5 day. That will still lead to $220-230m, but for Pixar that is a weak ass opening. Kylo Ren will finish the job that the asteroid started.

Re: Is Good Dino In Trouble Now?
Inside Out did 90 3 day, if this doesn't do that over 5, I'll eat a shoe.
And if people were interested in Mockingjay or Spectre, people would have seen them. Star Wars is not the problem, just no one cared.

Re: Is Good Dino In Trouble Now?
I don't think Star Wars is the problem but the general lukewarm state of the box office right now. This Pixar effort doesn't seem particularly unique. I'm only expecting a $65m 5-day for The Good Dinosaur.

For 99% of people this is just a new Pixar movie.

Re: Is Good Dino In Trouble Now?
I don't see how Star Wars is impacting THG and Spectre. I mean yes the hype might not be upto Star Wars level but that doesn't mean people will wait for 2 months to see a movie. December generally has one or two big movies (maybe not to the level of Star Wars). Its like saying that the entire summer 2017 is fucked now that a new Star Wars movie is planned.
THG had already shown signs of decrease specially without the Games so this isn't hugely surprising. Spectre's hype and reviews were not even close to Skyfall which most likely was the peak of the franchise domestically.
As for TGD I never saw a HUGE opening for it. Similar stone age animation movie The Croods opened to just $43m. Pixar's name is the biggest asset here and then maybe dinosaurs which is why I would say it can match IO's 3-day opening in 5-days. Its not about BO's state just setting up the right expectations.

I'd also like to mention that we are coming from a quiet ending to September and aside from Martian a disappointing October which also doesn't help with general audience in admissions.

Re: Is Good Dino In Trouble Now?
Hype does seem rather muted for this. This is the first time that Pixar is releasing two movies in the same year, so that's going to affect hype/demand somewhat. Inside Out was definitely helped a lot by not only its quality, but by said quality being a bit of a return to form for them. Reviews for this are looking to be closer to the pre-Inside Out streak, which won't help things.
All that said, it's the last animated movie of the year, and Pixar+Dinosaurs has plenty of inherent appeal. It's going to be lower-tier Pixar in terms of gross, but nothing for Disney to cry over.

How did your last shoe taste? Watch out what you say or you will soon run out of shoes.

I really feel like there isn't anticipation for this... wouldn't be surprised if the 5 day was less than 65.

Re: Is Good Dino In Trouble Now?
I think anything around $60-70 million in five days would already be decent for it. I mean Tangled made $68 million over five days on Thanksgiving. It had Narnia in its third and Yogi Bear in its fourth weekend and it still made $200 million domestically.

Re: Is Good Dino In Trouble Now?
Ohhhhh yes. There's not enough appeal for adults, and dinosaurs have already been done this year (and practically seen by every single kid given the size of Jurassic World).
Still thinking The Good Dinosaur will lose to The Martian.

Re: Is Good Dino In Trouble Now?
Eh I don't really think so, but the way the boxoffice has been going lately you never know. All I do know is that Peanuts, HT2, and Goosebumps are close to finishing up and the success of JW should mean that dinosaurs are still in demand and popular again, especially among kids, but the marketing does feel somewhat muted.

Zwackerm, what will you feel like, when Star Wars makes more than Mockingjay 2 and The Good Dinosaur combined?

This movie is one of Pixar's weaker efforts - it's absolutely gorgeous visually but the story just isn't there. It's geared much more to small children than something like Inside Out.

Re: Is Good Dino In Trouble Now?
Anything $175 m + is a win still for Pixar with this one imo. This is the first time they've had two movies in one year so even a Wreck It Ralph type performance is a win imo. It's between Inside Out ($350 m +) and Finding Nemo ($500 m + imo), so it really isn't going to move the needle at all really over the long-term. More like a statistical blip.

I think its odd that Pixar had such an unending string of 11 masterpieces, but only 1 out of their last five films has been on par with those first 11. Is someone who used to be involved not anymore? Why have they lowered their standards for the release of a film?
