Screen Counts and Crowd Reports (November 14-16)
I've got a new age girl Tell us what she's like An environmentalist girl Does she ride a bike? She has a crystal necklace Does she spend a lot of cash? Though her vibes are rather reckless She's heading for a crash
Oh, her flowing skirt is blowing in a transcendental wind And she wonders without knowing where did we begin
Mary Moon, she's a vegetarian Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon Mary Moon will outlive all the septuagenarians Mary Moon, Mary Moon, Mary Moon Oh, she loves me so, she hates to be alone She don't eat meat, but she sure like the bone

At my theater between the 8:00 and 10:00 showings of Dumb and Dumber To we sold 37 tickets, which is about on par with Interstellar.

Re: Screen Counts and Crowd Reports (November 14-16)
My showing last night at 8 pm for Dumb and Dumber To had more people than Interstellar did last week at 8pm. Dumb and Dumber To is either really front-loaded, or going to push 40M this weekend. I was impressed by the turnout more than the movie though.

I've heard my local theater had a solid turnout last night, as well. It's been many years since a November film with this theater count has cracked $40m OW but mid to high 30's seems quite possible.

Re: Screen Counts and Crowd Reports (November 14-16)
Well, in China, things are looking great for Interstellar. My friend in Guangzhou can't get a ticket because they're all booked. And I found it difficult to get one too (but I booked last night for today). My screening was very well attended. Out of around 300 seats, I'd say 250 were bought. But at my local IMAX, it only has 3 screenings per day (10am, 4pm, 10pm). The Chinese seem impressed with it. I just got a feeling.

I saw Birdman tonight in a 122 seat theater at 6:35. It was around 95% full. Trailers were for The Wedding Ringer, Into the Woods, Wild, Inherent Vice, Black Hat, Top Five and The Second Best Marigold Hotel.

Big Hero 6 12:15 About 15% full in a 300-seater
Trailers The Penguins of Madagascar Tomorrowland Paddington Annie Inside Out
Even though it's not the game-changer that Frozen was, Big Hero 6 marks a strong continuation of Disney's in-house winning streak with animation. On top of being consistently entertaining from start to finish, it also succeeds in crafting some sincerely heartfelt moments, even if said moments are clearly predictable (honestly, once the concept was introduced, who didn't know exactly what Baymax would do at the climax, and what the pertinent lines of dialogue would be?). The filmmakers wisely emphasize the relationship between the protagonist, Hiro, and the nursing robot, Baymax, and this relationship successfully mirrors that of John Connor and the T-800 of Terminator 2 in about as family-friendly a fashion as could be expected, and little of its potency is lost on an older viewer because of the delicacy and cleverness of its integration into the main storyline. Although the focus on Baymax's antics detracts from the development of the other heroes included in the title, it ultimately forms the backbone of the film's strong and affecting emotional appeal; even with the predictability of the situation in play, it's tough not to feel for the characters in the third act because of how well their relationship has been developed. The film also does a commendable job of dealing with themes of loss and pain, and even though it isn't quite as eloquent as fellow 2014 animation piece How to Train Your Dragon 2 in this regard, it still feels very emotionally resonant and more morally challenging than the typical family film. In addition to its strengths on an emotional front, the filmmakers also do solid work with physical comedy and sight gags, which more than successfully alleviate some of the film's darker material and provide some of its more memorable moments. Although it might be easy to write Big Hero 6 off as a somewhat lesser effort in the face of last year's Frozen, it's about on par with Wreck-It Ralph in terms of succeeding well enough to be thoroughly entertaining not only for younger viewers, but also for adults who wander into it with or without the accompaniment of children. B+
Audience seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. For a Saturday matinee, it was a pretty even split between families and teens/adults without children.
On a related note, this theatre also ended up selling out the 2:40 and 6:30 IMAX shows of Interstellar. This point feels especially significant for Interstellar's IMAX run considering that few movies seem to sell out IMAX shows hours in advance during their second weekends.

I saw Big Hero 6 in 3D at 3:10 this afternoon. There was around 25 people in a 130 seat theater. Trailers were for Spare Parts, Minions, Hillsong: Let Hope Rise, Annie, Penguins of Madagascar, Tomorrowland and Inside Out.
