It's definitely disappointing that it's sub 150.

Did you say the same thing when IRON MAN 2 opened? Iron Man 2 was still fresh out of the era where sequel increases happened a lot more frequently than they do now. Almost nothing increases from its predecessor these days, even the big WOM hits. I'm not sure why people were expecting much different from this, especially with so many sequels have big declines. John Wick and Pitch Perfect are really the only recent sequels to significantly build on their predecessor.

Perfectly aligned with the international 50% increases. The quality of it's success depends on it's legs.

 Re: Friday Numbers (May 5)
Most boring start of a recent MCU movie. Let's hope the legs are somewhere close to the first.
Fate is now $12m behind F6 and the difference will keep growing with a smaller Friday.
Great for TBB and BatB, I don't think the latter got the boost from GotG releasing.

 Re: Friday Numbers (May 5)
I'm seeing a 25-30% increase from Friday minus previews, which would put the weekend on track for $140-143M. A very strong result unless we see Civil War legs from this thing. I will say, though, the more years that go by, the more impressed I become by Transformers 2's first five days. Did you say the same thing when IRON MAN 2 opened? Perception wise, there would have been a pretty big difference between a $140M OW and the $128M that IM2 got. Also, obviously no one ever thought Guardians 2 was going to break the OW record.

 Re: Friday Numbers (May 5)
It sucks there's some big fight tonight or something. Yesterday was Cinco De Mayo and then tonight there's a fight. So many things to dampen the box office .

 Re: Friday Numbers (May 5)
Good number for Guardians. I knew it wouldn't do 400m, it just didn't seem realistic. It'll probably be a long time before we see a 200m+ grosser increase in sequels like Pitch Perfect and John Wick.
Bad for 3 Generations, too bad.

 Re: Friday Numbers (May 5)
Yeah technically this is a good opening, but like I said last night these numbers are still somewhat disappointing considering how this should have appealed to a wider audience than your typical MCU film and the fact that the first movie was quite beloved even though it came out not too long ago. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the weekend goes for it.

 Re: Friday Numbers (May 5)
Given the fact Guardians of the Galaxy was a B list property for a long time, this franchise is doing very very well. The first movie's performance was amazing and this sequel is going to end up with a total similar to the first. Pretty damn good results for Marvel.

It'll be disappointed if it doesn't top the original domestic gross

Good but expected numbers for GotG2 if that $51m number holds.

 Re: Friday Numbers (May 5)
I don't know. It feels a bit disappointing (come at me, Magnus!) but on the other hand it's still going to make $130m opening, which is an increase over the first and a fucking huge opening for it. I am glad for it. It is Stallone's largest opening ever, and by a huge margin too! Obviously it only increased because he is in it.

 Re: Friday Numbers (May 5)
130m OW is huge increase over the first film but can't help but feel disappointed. It needs to top 400m or it's fail for me. Damn you expectations!
