 Sin City 2 box-office potential/predictions
Despite its untraditional style (or maybe even because of it), its over-the-top violence and the fact that it was almost entirely black 'n white, Sin City was able to score one of the most surprising opening weekends this year and wound up with a decent toital gross, outdoing both Kill Bill installments. Sin City opened on April 1st this year to $29.1 million and finished just above $74 million. The multiplier of around 2.54 was less than impressive, but frontloadness should have been expected for this kind of a movie anyway.
The thing is that I still think that despite the bad multiplier, the WoM for the movie has been pretty good. Actually very good. We all know that a sequel to this movie is coming next year. Rodriguez said that filming is likely to start in January, so we can expect Sin City 2 in summer 2006 (I'd guess some time in August).
I think we can expect pretty big things from the sequel and I don't say that just judging by the good WoM (like the exceptional IMDB rating). The movie had amazing DVD sales. While the studio never published the sales numbers, I am sure they were really big since the movie was #1 at Amazon some weeks before the official sales start and even in its second week it was the most-sold movie of the week AHEAD of The Ring Two's first week sales and that is pretty impressive.
While I don't expect a better multiplier for the sequel, I think the opening weekend will certainly improve, comparably to Resident Evil/Resident Evil: Apocalypse, only on a bigger scale.
As of now I'd predict the following:
Opening weekend - $38 million
Total gross - $91 million

How is a sequel going to work when most of the main characters died?
Personally I thought the Marv story was well done and interesting (though obviously overgory). The rest of the stories seemed kind of "meh" to me, not that well thought out. I almost fast forwarded through Clive Owen's segment, it was so dull.
Anyhow, 28/75 with good dvd sales sounds right to me. Unless they make a better than expected movie, which sometimes happens.

One of the graphic novels the sequel is based on, is a prequel. A Dame to Kill for which means that at least Marv, Manute, Dwight, Gail and Miho will re-appear.

It will benefit from good WOM and DVD sales, but either way its dark material hurts its huge potential...Sure Matrix was R but it wasn't nearly as violent/sexual. It's probably a lock for a gross bigger than its predecessor, and possibly 100 million, although Kill Bill 2 made less than Kill Bill, and it is probably a good comparison

I think a great comparison (although it's PG-13) is The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. Sin City was big on rentals, but not as much as Identity. DVD sales were huge, though. It also has a huge fanbase, the first had fantastic WOM, and it has a summer release.
I'll be shocked if this doesn't outgross the original.

Frenchman - Kill Bill 2 didnt have the benefit of Kill Bill Vol 1 being released on dvd. IIRC - Vol 1 was released on dvd a week before Vol 2 was in theatres. Not enough time to build up a new fan base.

One thing to note is that this is being released by The Weinstein Company, so it'll be interesting to see how many theaters thy can book.
I say big hit, little legs:
Opening: 37.0
Total: 86.9 (2.35)

"Box Office Potential" and "Predictions" mean the same thing, as far as I know.
I mean, it has predictions in there...
Hmm.

Yeah, actually that's what I meant mine for, but if BJ insists he can of course keep this as well.

Good comparison, with the difference that The Bourne Identity had better legs.
Then again, I don't think we can expect a $50+ million opening either. An opening of around $40 million woulc already be amazing for an R-rated black 'n white film.

The first one seemed more like a stand-alone movie. People went to see the neat effects, not for the story. Reading over most of the reviews, it sounded like people only praised the effects in the movie, not the actual movie itself. I don't think it will be as big as the first. In fact, I guarantee it.
Opening: $20 million
Total: $44 million
