The record is Bourne Ultimatum's 69.2 million. What do ya'll think?

I used to think this would do lukewarm but I'm getting more confident about it now. I say it has a chance.

Looking at the list it's amusing that Rush Hour 2 and Signs from over 10 years ago are still in the top 3. Guardians needs to gross 55 million to be in the top 5.

Interesting point about RH2 and Signs being still in the top 3. That was when the studios were still releasing big films in August. 2001-2003 was the peak (after the month became more lucrative in the 90s - The Fugitive, Sixth Sense etc).

After that they abandoned it for some reason.

$36m opening.

I just cannot fathom this film opening over 70 million. If it does, Marvel's brand is a lot stronger than I initially thought. The film just looks so NOT mainstream. This tracking is puzzling.

Deadline is claiming that it's tracking at about $68-$70M right now with some thinking it could go as high as $80M. Now, as much as I want this movie to be a success there is no way it's coming within $5M of Thor 2's opening when that movie had a more established character on top of an Avengers bump.

I say $70M MAX, but realistically I think a low 60's opening is more likely.

It will get above $50m but I don't see it getting to regular second-tier Marvel openings of low-70's to mid-90's.

I think it looks like it could be a very mainstream hit. It looks like Pirates of the Caribbean in space.

I would peg this at a high $50 mil opening. But anything over $40 mil, IMO, would be really good for it.

The trailer got a great reaction at Transformers and the TV ads have been good (and non-stop). It should open right around where Thor and Cap did, so $70M+ is certainly possible. I'm in! The Marvel brand will finally give us a breakout hit this summer.

if only it didn't have TMNT in its second weekend, it could be really leggy. Like, save the summer leggy. If it is good, maybe even POTC leggy.

That doesn't mean much tracking wise. The Wolverine was tracking for 75-80 million opening. If this doesn't get the 3D or IMAX shares people are thinking it will, that'll put it in the easy 50-55 million range for opening. I just don't see this happening. No one I know wants to see it. Even when I explain the Avengers angle, there still kind of "eh" towards it. It certainly doesn't feel more hyped than Maleficent and Apes.

I know a lot of people who want to see it.

Me and my friend thought we had a choice to watch either this or Deliver Us From Evil, and we both chose the latter.

The big effects, Summer blockbuster crap will attract the kiddies, sure, but mature people will opt for something else. The Bourne Ultimatum is for adults, and that is why it holds the record, which is strange as I think August is a month where kids are fully out of school - but perhaps they are partying instead, not sure. But adults need to get away from their annoying kids that they hate so much, so they go to the movies.

I expect a $36m opening weekend for Guardians of the Galaxy and a pretty awful 2.25 multiplier for a finish of $81m. But, I have been wrong before.

Kids start going back to school in early August.

I will put this right at $65-$70 million opening so the record is likely.

Definitely in for 70 million now. Perhaps 80.

Reviews are indeed great, and it is from Marvel (who seem to be popular right now), so perhaps my $36m prediction is too low. But I am sticking with it. I just have a feeling that this fairly unknown property will not get the general audience out of their house and into the auditoriums.
