 Did anyone else realize...
Summer 2014 will be the first summer since 1979 where the winner does not adjust to over 300 million (The Amityville Horror) and will be the least attended summer winner since 1966 (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?).

This past holiday weekend was the worst attended in 27 years. All around just not a good summer box office wise.

Why would you adjust a 2014 movie anyway? and if you're talking about adjusting, then you are wrong, because in 1 or 2 years, the winner of Summer 2014 will adjust to over $300m (providing ticket-prices increase, which is likely).
But yeah, bad summer.

I looked up the highest grossing films of the year on wikipedia and then searched them on box office mojo.

But yeah, bad summer. Just another way of saying the #1 for the summer will have the least amount of admissions out of any summer winner in the past 35 years.

Blame it on the World Cup .. and the USA thinking they had a chance at winning it.

 Re: Did anyone else realize...
Unless something finishes with over $275 mil, 1-2 years is not enough time for it to adjust over $300 mil. That may take many years.

 Re: Did anyone else realize...
Many years...like 35 years? That's how long the OP allows for some films....so the comparison is unfair and therefore invalid.

But yeah, bad summer. ticket prices have been pretty stagnant since 2010, trend may continue for the next 1-2 years.

 Re: Did anyone else realize...
Regardless...giving on film 35 years of ticket inflation to reach $300m then not allowing another film ANY years of ticket inflation to reach $300m....is not a fair comparison. It's stupid to even mention adjusted numbers as a point. He'd have been better off mentioning admissions, but that would have required ever so slightly more research.

 Re: Did anyone else realize...
That's probably true. But if you were to inflate this years movies grosses to over $300 mil, then previous years movies would also inflate much higher, still leaving this year in the dust. He just used an arbitrary endpoint.

 Re: Did anyone else realize...
It's possible that not one summer film will end up in the yearly top 5. Hunger Games, Lego and Cap already hold 3 out of 5 spots. Interstellar, Hobbit 3 and Big Hero 6 all have potential to gross more than the ~$240M final gross of Maleficent.

By the end of August, the yearly will most likely be:
1. Captain America 2 2. The LEGO Movie 3. Transformers 4

Whoop, this is wrong. The Longest Yard won summer 1974 with an adjusted gross of 184 million.

How many tickets has X-Men currently sold?
And what did you use for "summer"? May-August?

 Re: Did anyone else realize...
The "average" of those films is 57.5m tickets sold. And if you exclude the extreme breakouts over 100m, it drops down to 53.2m tickets sold.

 Re: Did anyone else realize...
Wow, 2014 will have the lowest number 1 since the blockbuster era started in 75 with Jaws. Both Maleficent and X4 could miss 30m tickets. Considering both have 3D on their side there is a good chance they will both miss 30m tickets.

Midnight Cowboy was the No. 1 film in summer 1969. That's a surprise.
