 Re: Early Friday Numbers
35 sounds very optimistic. highly doubt it does 95 with that number.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Still a shot at 100m.
It's incredible how unexciting this OW when you compare it to the first Spidey in 2002 which had the most mind lowing OD/OW ever!!

Well, time to reboot again. Not to mention this one had a five hour advantage over the last film.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
If it indeed makes just $35M with the previews in that number, using IM3 Saturday increase (sans midnights/previews) and Sunday decrease would be an $87M weekend and doing the same for Avengers would result in an $88.6M weekend.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Which would put it just a hair under $50m below the first film's Sunday pace. That isn't totally fair, but with lower May weekdays and pretty big competition every week for the next month, I don't think this film is getting close to the reboot's domestic tally.

Yeah, it'll get a nice bump in China due to the lack of TDKR, but even a doubled gross there doesn't ensure $700m if it struggles to hit the $200m mark here. NEIGHBORS next weekend is going to steal teens. GODZILLA the week after is going to steal geeks. DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is going to steal everyone. An $85m opening weekend does not lock up $200m, and it's not hitting $700m worldwide without $200m in the States.

Magnus wrote: It's still gonna do 700m+ WW. It's a disappointment I guess like MoS was in that it's a big 200M+ budget film and the expectation for these kinds of core franchise films is 900m+ WW. But the film is by not means a flop just cause it's gonna do under 240m domestic. Mos was the first film of the series, not the 5th. No way this performance is comparable to MOS. Mos was the biggest break out of last summer. People called WWZ a break out and it did far less with the same price tag.

MAN OF STEEL had an inherent hurdle because Superman is seen as more of an American hero.

I said an inherent hurdle. You have to be really, really good to top it.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
to be fair, CA2 is is CA's 3rd film. The next Superman movie would have seen large increases everywhere abroad. Adding in Batman makes tracking it more difficult. Anything under 37 millions essentially rules out a 90 million weekend.
Never say expectations dont matter. Just a month apart and will open to roughly the same, but the consensus on their performance will be polar opposites.

I wonder how word-of-mouth will turn out. I may very well be projecting my thoughts on the overall audience, but I struggle to see audiences going too wild for this overlong, stop-and-go, confused film. It may bore children.

There is very, very little in this movie to entertain children. But that was true of Captain America 2 as well. Parents don't seem to care. It's a superhero movie. Kids see a superhero, and they say they want to see the movie. This is why I think the scene toward the end with the little kid in the spider-man outfit was a huge mistake. Kids are impressionable and what is that scene telling kids?

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Actually I went to my screening with my friend's two 7-year old kids and they both said they liked it. I am not sure it was pressure to say it was good, or it was in general that they like any superhero movie. Though I do agree TASM2 in general will bore the kids, specially the run time is so big and in middle there isn't too much action. CA2 atleast had something going on every 10 minutes and was funny in parts where it was all talk-talk.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
We will be having 5 Game 7s from NBA playoff for the weekend, an unprecedented occurrence. Will be interesting to see how this will affect TASM2. My feeling is that it should definitely affect some.
