That's quite clear cut. Domestic: Shrek 2, overseas Frozen

Re: What's more impressive: Frozen or Shrek 2 BO runs
Shrek 2 made $565m dom adj without a 3D surcharge.
It also made another $613m os adj, predating the era of mega overseas box office.
So Shrek 2 pulled down $1.18b ww - - almost the same as Frozen's $1.25b ww total.
With the aforementioned advantages of 3D surcharge and a hot overseas market, Frozen clearly has the lesser BO run - - Shrek 2 FTW!

Re: What's more impressive: Frozen or Shrek 2 BO runs
The fact that SHREK 2 was not beaten by any other animated movie in the last 10 years domestically despite 10 years of inflation and five years of 3D surcharges plus the fact that it became the No. 7 WW biggest hit of all-time (very close to FROZEN's No. 5 WW) makes me pick SHREK 2...

You can't adjust the overseas box-office the same way you adjust domestic. And even if you didn, Frozen beats that number by over $250 million by the end of its run.

If Frozen does add that much (20% of it's current take) before the end of it's run, that still wouldn't make up for it's 3D premium. Shrek 2 remains king.

Re: What's more impressive: Frozen or Shrek 2 BO runs
Frozen's 3d share is miniscule. I dont think that is a factor. Shrek 2's domestic run was fantastic but that was in an era when it was the only CGI animation to release during entire summer and hardly any kid friendly movies. Now we have dozen CGI flicks releasing every year and that makes it less of an event. The fact than frozen is not even a sequel and could make so much in this era makes it lot more impressive. Plus its legs make it a run that is not seen that much these days.
I pick frozen.

INTL the 3D share is much bigger than domestic. Here in Germany FROZEN had a 3D share of 68 % - and that's in admissions - b.o. share should be around 80 % or so...

Re: What's more impressive: Frozen or Shrek 2 BO runs
Shrek 2 by a considerable margin. Frozen's success was definitely unexpected and mind-blowing in its own right, but Shrek 2 seemed to be on a completely different level during its run ten years ago. Shrek was beloved, for sure, but not so beloved that the sequel becoming the third-highest-grossing film of all time seemed even remotely possible. It was a monster that outdid the already gigantic performance of its predecessor in nearly every single way; pretty much the only way in which the first Shrek was more impressive was its even second weekend hold (although Shrek 2 broke the Memorial Day record of the time during its second weekend, which was an extremely impressive feat).

What is the percentage premium for a 3D ticket for children and adults in Germany? In Burbank, California the premiums are as follows: Child 2D = $10.25 Child RealD 3D = $14.25 ( 39% premium over 2D) Child IMAX 3D = $16.25 ( 59% premium over 2D) Adult 2D = $13 Adult RealD 3D = $17 ( 31% premium over 2D) Adult IMAX 3D = $19 ( 46% premium over 2D)

There is rarely a difference in children and adult 3D tickets. The percentage is about 35-42%.

Shrek 2 was coming off Shrek during an era when CGI films were less common. Frozen was original. So, Frozen.

It's also worth mentioning that Shrek 2 surpassed the previous animated record of its time by over $100 million... and said record (Finding Nemo) was just a year old at that point.

It's Frozen. Unless we're talking opening weekend.
But everything outside of that... Frozen.

FROZEN 'cause it was an original film and Shrek 2 was a sequel to a successful first movie

Re: What's more impressive: Frozen or Shrek 2 BO runs
The fact that Shrek 2 was released in a time when there were less CGI movies released means very little. Surely it gave the first Toy Story a bit of a bump to be this first film to use the medium, but I'm sure the novelty had worn off. The reason they all did so well was because all the early ones were so good that it wasn't until Madagascar came out they weren't all megablockbusters.
