Actors with the most number 1 openings?
I'm going to start compiling a list. Talking with Lecter in the Stallone thread made me want to do this. There isn't too much information for me to go on, outside of BOM. So obviously it'll most stick to post 1980, unless there is direct information.
Going to put the overall list here.
Tom Cruise- 21 Bruce Willis- 17 Harrison Ford- 17 Eddie Murphy- 16 Sylvester Stallone- 16 Robin Williams- 15 Morgan Freeman- 15 Tom Hanks- 15 Jim Carrey- 15 Nic Cage- 15 Arnold Schwarzenegger- 14 Tommy Lee Jones- 13 Liam Neeson- 13 Mel Gibson- 13 Will Smith- 13 Mark Walhberg- 12 Denzel Washington- 12 Julia Roberts- 12 John Travolta- 11 Sigourney Weaver- 11 Matt Damon- 10 Keanu Reeves- 10 Nicole Kidman-10 Cameron Diaz- 10 Bill Murray- 10 Michael Douglas- 10 George Clooney-10 Johnny Depp- 10 Sandra Bullock- 9 Helena Bohnam Carter- 9 Angelina Jolie- 9 Robert Downey Jr.- 8 Clint Eastwood- 8 (That we know of) Wesley Snipes- 8 Ben Affleck- 8 Jodie Foster-8 Meryl Streep- 6 Kevin Costner- 6 Steven Seagal- 6 Leonardo DiCaprio- 5 Jeff Bridges- 5 Richard Gere- 5 Kurt Russell- 4 Russell Crowe- 4

Re: Actors with the most number 1 openings?
If you are strictly technical, Gibson's count is 12 since Pocahontas hit number one upon expansion, but opened in limited release.

I'm sticking with wide releases, as Pocahontas opening was extremely impressive limited as well, but it still debuted wide following week. That was more there version of previews back then. Also trying to stick away from appearances, starring roles, including starring animated roles.

Re: Actors with the most number 1 openings?
Douglas always had a respected following, and highly paid, but his films always depended more on legs, and were less about action and big budgets. Only 3 crossed 100 million unadjusted. Fatal Attraction's opening only adjusts 16 million, but the total gross adjusts to 320 million.

Re: Actors with the most number 1 openings?
Just out of curiosity, I went through Robert Redford's career. Unfortunately, only a total gross is available for many of his most iconic films, including All the President's Men, The Sting, and The Way We Were. But he has opened at number one four times since 1984:
The Natural: 5 million (May 1984) - adjusts to 12 million Sneakers: 10 million (September 1992) - adjusts to 19 million Indecent Proposal: 18 million (April 1993) - adjusts to 35 million Up Close & Personal: 11 million (March 1996) - adjusts to 20 million
Out of Africa reached number one later in its run, but opened at number four.
