It took a while, but welcome back summer 2001
Honestly, 5 films adjust to 85-100 million opening weekend wise. It's exciting no one knows if even CA will be beat for this summer. It's anybodies game again until Hunger games 3.1. Worldwide v. Domestic this is the most exciting since 2005.
X-Men as the winner never felt right as OS would never take it to where it needs to be. But its the one year where WOM is the most important Can X-men change what it's known for or will MMD weekend be enough for it to squeak by. Either way, I know some are disappointed but I personally love this summer so far.

I would not be too hasty, WW TF4 will easily dominate due to huge grosses from China
If CA2 can make 117 million in China, cleary shows TF4 is set for a lot more.
Anyways I think 2015 will likely end up like summer 2005..The film of the summer is in May and easily dominates the box office.

So far I think it's resembling 2009 a little more. Mockingjay is this year's Transforners 2 and Interstellar could be this years Avatar (in the sense it's a sci-fi wild card).
However 2001 is fairly apt as far as the summer goes.

Um, no.
It would've been better if they had better legs so they would all duke it out at more than just $190-$230m.
Right now, they're all going to fall below Fast and Furious 6 which is pretty terrible. Not in the least because that movie was crap and that franchise is frontloaded as hell.

Jack Sparrow wrote: It doesn't feel like 2001 It's odd to say but I was doing this then and everyone was extremely disappointed with the opening weekends that nothing could top TLW, everything was solid but underwelming. Jurassic Park III would have if not for the 5 day opening. I see both T4 and DOPA doing similar openings. Really it's How to Train your Dragon's summer by default now. Maybe closer to 03 with all of the action films?

Re: It took a while, but welcome back summer 2001
Summer 2001 was generally a huge success though. Only Pearl Harbour and A.I were disappointments (the latter more so).
It was a huge step up from Summer 2000 and the OW's of Mummy Returns, Shrek, Rush Hour 2, Fast and Furious, Planet of the Apes, American Pie 2, Tomb Raider etc were all highly regarded - its the big 2nd weekend drops (outside of Shrek) that was the bigger story.

And yeah as we all expected - Summer 2014 is going to generally a sub par one. Magnus is right in that losing Good Dinosaur and Fast 7 really hurt.

Re: It took a while, but welcome back summer 2001
I think the current slot of movies can still do good if the OW are huge even though the most movies are seeing a nasty 2nd weekend drop.
