Will Blue Is the Warmest Color earn 1 million?
As far as specialty runs go, this film's might prove interesting.
Against it:
- in French (not a significant problem on the art-house circuit, but still) - no major star power, although Léa Seydoux is not entirely unknown - rated NC-17 for explicit sexual content - three hours long
For it:
- Oscar potential, particularly for its lead performance - per their web site, it seems IFC is not releasing it day-and-date on demand (their usual practice nowadays), so they must have particular faith in its theatrical potential - won the the top prize at Cannes
So, can this reach 1 million, even if it requires months upon months of play buoyed by awards-season recognition?
It opens in select cities on October 25th.

Yes. I think it will definitely reach 1 Million. 2 Million is not impossible, but at the moment I'm seeing a bit over 1 Million. I'm excited for this film!

Me, too.
To a certain extent, I believe its unusual angle--a sexy, well-reviewed three-hour lesbian drama--will help it on the art-house circuit. It will turn heads and become an event among a certain movie-going set.

Absolutely. It's buzz-worthy. I think it will do well in limited release. It's sadly not eligible for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars but I'm thinking it will be nominated at the Golden Globes.

The reviews out of Cannes were out of this world - it was unanimously chosen to win the Palme, and they loved it so much they also awarded the Palme to the two leads (since Cannes rules say the Palme winner can't win any other awards). Also, according to Cannes experts at AwardsWatch it was the best-reviewed film out of the festival in at least the last 30 years, and already reviews are strong here (100%/9.0 with 12 reviews on RT, 96 w/four 100s out of seven reviews on MC).
I'm thinking a $2-4 million final gross, depending on how/if it expands outside of art houses and its awards success (I'm predicting Actress and Screenplay nominations ATM).

I would love to see it get nominated for Best Actress since it isn't eligible for Foreign Film. It's so crazy it isn't eligible here because of when it's being released in France. Hope this won't cause the Academy to overlook it completely. One negative is that the Academy won't have to watch it since it's not eligible in Foreign which I believe lessens its chances in other categories.
Here's the international trailer with subtitles for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. I eagerly await the domestic trailer, which should be out anytime now.

There's a lot of controversy exploding from the director's treatment of the actresses on set:
Quote:
That much was confirmed when Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos sat down to discuss the film with The Daily Beast’s Marlow Stern. “It’s hard because I’m not that familiar with lesbian sex,” Exarchopoulos said about the big scene, which Seydoux noted took 10 days to complete. The entire shoot was similarly exhausting: Of the scene where the two girls first encounter each other, Seydoux estimated that the 30-second meeting took more than 100 takes to satisfy director Abdellatif Kechiche. When the two giggled after one take, Seydoux said Kechiche threw a set monitor onto the street, screaming, “I can’t work under these conditions!” The actresses really hit each other during a scene (“In America, we’d all be in jail,” Seydoux said), and though Kechiche is a “tortured” “genius” and Exarchopoulos found working with him “a good learning experience” as an actor, it’s no surprise both actresses said they would probably never work with him again.
At the very least, it's certainly getting a film a lot of publicity, alongside its NC-17 rating.

But this kind of publicity is negative, IMO. I wouldn't want this to taint people's opinions of the film.

I have already seen some "I don't want to see this anymore" reactions online, though the actresses are already trying to clarify what they meant with this interview. So there are some shades of grey to the story.
Either way, it already seems to be building a reputation as the most controversial movie of the year, which can only help more people take notice of it (and raves continue to be strong).

It had its TIFF premiere last night so I'm eagerly anticipating more reviews coming in.

This isn't a huge shock. I'm just glad I don't live there.

Made $2,336,916 in France last weekend, placing 4th. That seems pretty good. That is about what Insidious Chapter 2 has done there in 2 weeks.

That's nearly double what Amour opened to last year around the same time of year despite also winning the Palme, so yeah it's pretty decent. Could cross $10 million if legs are good.

Re: Will Blue Is the Warmest Color earn 1 million?
This opens at four theaters next weekend.
Here's the opening weekend PTAs for the last five non-English Palme D'Or winners (not counting The Class, whose OW isn't on BOM):
Amour - $22,755 (3 theaters) Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives - $7,847 (3) The White Ribbon - $19,949 (3) 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days - $25,856 (2) L'Enfant - $6,362 (7)
The last Palme D'Or to open in October was Elephant, which had a $15,559 PTA from 6 theaters.
And here's the opening weekend PTAs for the last five NC-17 films to make over $1 million:
Killer Joe - $12,633 (3) Shame - $34,952 (10) Lust, Caution - $63,918 (1) Bad Education - $49,123 (3) The Dreamers - $28,526 (5)
I don't expect it to go quite as high as high as a couple of those films (Shame and Lust, Caution had slightly more crossover appeal, Bad Education had Almodovar's fanbase), but buzz has been high, and reviews are likely to be strong. Something around $20,000 PTA sounds ideal to aim for. Maybe $25,000 if hype is strong.

I think an opening PTA to Amour is okish though I somehow feel this will open a bit lower. It might have to rely on WOM to get past $1m mark IMO.

Yeah, WOM will be key. It could also pick up awards traction, which would help it a lot too (it should at least win a major critics award or two, I think).
Also, IFC/Sundance Selects' top opening weekend PTAs over 20k (at more than 1 theater):
1. Che - $35,535 (2) 2. Frances Ha - $34,350 (4) 3. Cave of Forgotten Dreams - $27,280 (5) 4. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days - $25,856 (2) 5. Summer Hours - $24,742 (2) 6. In the Loop - $23,983 (8) 7. Together - $22,294 (2) 8. Pina - $22,671 (3)
All finished above the $1 million mark, and all the ones that opened in more than 2 theaters finished over $2 million. So a PTA around or above $20,000 would actually be a really good sign for it. $15,000 is probably a reasonable place to keep expectations.

I was actually expecting about a $22,000 PSA.

I am too (well, closer to $25,000), but I'm also predicting a $2+ million gross for it. I just mean that if it opens to a $15,000 PTA it's still on track for a decent run.
