Machete Kills is just embarrassing. There are no other words for that.

Gravity...also no words, but on a different spectrum. Not omly is $200 million a lock now, but also $250 million has a higher probability of happening than of not happening.

Glad to see an A CinemaScore for Captain Phillips. Rightly higher than Gravity's A-. ;)

Gravity slipped only 21 percent in its second weekend domestically -- the lowest decline in history for a film that opened over $55 million (The Incredibles was the previous record-holder at 29 percent). This doesn't count holiday weekends. It's also the lowest decline of the year to date for a movie playing in more than 2,000 theaters.

nice

Machete Kills' performance leaves me scared for Escape Plan.

GRAVITY's 2nd weekend would be October 7th biggest opening weekend and is still above tracking for its opening weekend...

3.86 multiplier to get to $250 m
4.99 multiplier to get to $300 m
6.09 multiplier to get to $350 m

Right now, I'll put Gravity at about $305-310 m. A 6.09 multiplier is possible but it all depends how it holds against the films in November.

Nah, that is hardly possible. Quality-wise, I mean.

I wonder if Machete's bomb also means that Mel Gibson has no pull whatsoever anymore.

Astonishing hold for Gravity. I was expecting more like 40% even with all the great buzz. May have to revoke what I said earlier about it not outgrossing The Blind Side?

A very, very impressive showing for Captain Phillips with the Gravity juggernaut in the marketplace. It deserves it. I hope it gets a Best Picture nod in addition to Hanks.

Machete Kills floppppppped.

Enough Said continues to hang in there. I'm hoping for a $15M total.

Very poor starts for Romeo & Juliet and The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, two fairly ambitious limited releases. The latter has a bit of star power (Jennifer Hudson, Anthony Mackie, Jeffrey Wright) and an 87 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Escape from Tomorrow also couldn't turn its unique premise and production history into large audiences, though this one may be available on demand. I can't remember.

It also has a terrible title.

Nah, that is hardly possible. Quality-wise, I mean.

After Earth+Last Airbender+Happening+Lady in the Water+Village >> Sharkboy+Planet Terror+Shorts+Spy Kids 4+Machete
It's a fucking fact. Rodriguez is a fucking embarrassment. As for his semi-watchable Planet Terror and Machete 1&2, what the fuck he thinks he is, a king of B-movies? Or a king of shitty kids films? I'm sick and tired of that shit. Anyone can make a B-movie or a shitty kids movie, but only Rodriguez does that for living since 2005.

Sorry, but no. Planet Terror and Machete alone (even though the latter is far far from great) still elevate the batch FAR above the ones you listed by Shyamalan!

The Village is a great film.

Unless you feel differently, Mr. R. Then I agree with you. Please don't pay anyone to beat me to death.

The Village was solid the first time, but the stupid twist ruins any potential enjoyment in subsequent viewings.

Machete bombed hard! Guess we will not be seeing Machete Kills Again.

I'm not surprised by the Machete bomb. I wrote some weeks ago that I expect less than $10m total. It seemed apparent nobody really wanted it.

From DHD:

45 IMAX locations shifted to playing Sony Pictures’ Captain Phillips.

I believe there are about 350 Imax screens domestically. So with 45 Imax locations shifting to CP, the 21% drop is all the more impressive. Last weekend's Imax average was close to $33,000, so that might have resulted in a $1-1.5 m difference in its weekend total.

Anyone who can shed light on how Gravity might have been effected by this?

My quick thoughts are it probably could have done $45-46 m if it had kept all of its Imax locations, considering how well its been doing on them.
