Re: Gravity International Box Office
It'll need well more than $400 million overseas in order to get to $700 million worldwide.
It'll all depend on China (as it so often does nowadays). Right now, I've got it pegged at $360-380 million overseas and $620-650 million worldwide.

Re: Gravity International Box Office
400m is locked for gravity unless it bombs in china and that is unlikely. its playing in lots of leggy markets(UK, France and Scandinavia) plus still has 2 big markets Japan and China. It should do well in both. I would say 100M in just 2 of them is possible. Another 80-100M in current markets. Overall close to 450M OS and I see close to 280M with oscar boost.

Re: Gravity International Box Office
It won't bomb in China, but I can see it making just an average $50m-$60m. There are so many movies in release right now.
Escape Plan and Thor 2 out now, RED2 out on the 15th Nov, Gravity out on the 20th Nov, a day later Catching Fire comes out, and the Epic opening on 29th Nov. Not to mention the Chinese films!
It wouldn't surprise me if it didn't do well with the Chinese either, and made just $20-$25m. There's almost no humour in it, and the Chinese love humour in everything. There's always the argument of Avatar, and I totally accept that it also had no humour, so the draw of amazing 3D and a thrilling idea might just attract hordes of people.
I'm undecided.

Re: Gravity International Box Office
I think one important argument is that Gravity is an IMAX film and I think outside of the US there is no country where IMAX is going as strong as in China. That will help.

Re: Gravity International Box Office
Yes, that undoubtedly will help. And by Nov 20th, Thor 2 will have pretty much maxed out its IMAX appeal too, so Gravity will be alone.

The sci-fi epic opened to $4.7 million in China on Tuesday, marking the biggest non-holiday opening day of all time for a Warners title. On Wednesday, the 3D pic earned another $4.2 million for a two-day China total of $9 million and a dominating 68 percent share of the market. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/b ... ce_now_png

Re: Gravity International Box Office
Those are great numbers from China. This is the market that loves visuals and even though the WOM might not be great (Its a case study that doesn't do well with Asian audience 'cause people expect action as depicted in previews).
IMAX being a great pull will definitely help this movie. I see the standard blockbuster total for it at around $50m-$60m from China and if the early numbers are any indication its not going to disappoint.

Re: Gravity International Box Office
That's a great start from China. It should easily get to $400m now....HUGE success. I was hoping for $1b breakout like Skyfall (Gravity is this year's biggest BO breakout afterall) but that's just out of question.
It should get to $700m WW which would be FANTASTIC for it.

Re: Gravity International Box Office
It should crawl to $400 million without Japan. Final gross will be around $435-445 million.

Re: Gravity International Box Office
Hmm so this one will also miss $500m OS mark...looks it this year not many movies crossed that mark.
Somehow the overall gross is being more spread these days than heavily centered on a single movie.
