 Early Friday Numbers (9-Aug-2013)
From BO.comElysium - $11.5 million Friday / $31+ million OW Planes - $9 million Friday / $27 million OW We're the Millers - $9.5 million Friday / $27 million 3-day Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters - $5 million Friday / $14-15 million 3-day http://www.boxoffice.com/latest-news/20 ... -soft-853kFriday Update #3: Sources tell BoxOffice that Elysium is heading toward an $11.5 million Friday, which should be enough to give it a $31+ million opening weekend. That's noticeably less than the $37.4 million enjoyed by 2009's District 9.
Planes is over-performing so far today with a projected $9 million Friday. The Cars spin-off could hit $27 million for the weekend, a great result for a film that wasn't originally planned for a theatrical release.
We're the Millers continues to shine with what looks to be a $9.5 million Friday. After strong results in its first two days (to the tune of $11.49 million) Millers is also targeting a $27 million three-day weekend, meaning a close race for second with Planes.
Fox's Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is looking more sluggish compared to other three new releases. The fantasy sequel may grab $5 million on Friday, setting it on a course of a $14-15 million three-day frame. Those numbers are far more modest than the original film which debuted to a $31.2 million three-day weekend in early 2010. From THRPlanes - $30m Elysium - no number but its in close race with Planes so about $30m We're the Millers - Assured for 5-day debut north of $30m (tracking better than Horrible Bosses $28.3m 3-day opening) Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters - 5-day debut of $27m-$28m ($18.1m-$19.1m) http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/p ... ded-603516

 Re: Early Friday Numbers (9-Aug-2013)
I think THR only had Planes's number when they posted the article and even then they did not release any Friday numbers.
BO's numbers look better and more detailed.

Great for Millers. Solid for everything really. Could have been better for Percy Jackson though but it does have family competition from Planes. Should have decent legs.

Seems expected for Elysium. Terrific for Planes and We're the Millers, which could both gross $100M+ if they hold well. Pretty strong mid August weekend overall.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers (9-Aug-2013)
I am intrigued to see Elysium's CinemaScore. Very good movie, but not the most conventional or "pleasant" summer action movie ever. Fairly brutal and anxious.

Great weekend. Over 100m injected by the new films which is great for August. Shame Rlsiu Couldn't get to 40m.

Looking like a good weekend after a couple clunkers. This should be enough to keep the next few weeks afloat (which look insanely dire).

Disappointing that Elysium with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster can't outopen "indie" District 9.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers (9-Aug-2013)
I saw it coming. It's plain and simple did not look like anything original. The gritty Alien slums film looked much more interesting then the "many poor try to overcome the few that have everything" storyline that has been done to death. Also the "Activate Daniel Day Lewis Knockoff" wasn't exactly a great selling point. Nothing he did was really that cool looking.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers (9-Aug-2013)
Elysium if turns true would still be a good number. It won't out open District 9 but the time difference could be the reason of people not seeing this as the Director's follow up to that movie.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers (9-Aug-2013)
Elysium opens to a very "Expendables number", and I suspect it will fail to reach $100m too. I hope it's a good movie, though.
Wow, 2 Guns dropped like a rock.
I'm amazed at how well The Conjuring is doing. Bravo Wan, bravo!

Umm, The Wolverine is looking at a 65% drop? WTF? It had barely compettiion with Elysium and Millers being rated R.

Turbo is looking at a 60-65% drop after dropping 55% the weekend before.
Fox is glum right now.

Fox is glum right now. It might struggle to $80 million, which would make it the lowest-grossing DreamWorks Animation film since Flushed Away. Ouch. Fruitvale had another crappy drop. It'll probably finish with $17-18 million. Pity. I wish we had a Blue Jasmine estimate...

Man, it seems that most limited films this summer have just been terrible. Sure Mud did ok, but it never really even attempted wide expansions. Is Blue Jasmine all there is left, I'm pretty sure World's End will get a wide release.

Fox is glum right now. And Disney is going to get $100M for a DTV. Planes outgrossing Turbo and Smurfs 2 is one of the bigger surprises of the summer.

I thought it would do more, but before seeing it last night I had no idea it was rated R. Millers is doing great. R-rated comedies are really on a roll.

BOM numbers: http://boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/The holdovers were just fucked, no lube. Horrible, horrible Friday-to-Friday drops, especially for The Wolverine, 2 Guns and Turbo.

Fox is glum right now. It might struggle to $80 million, which would make it the lowest-grossing DreamWorks Animation film since Flushed Away. Ouch. That's a lock anyway. It'd have to pass $100 million in order not to become DreamWorks' lowest-grossing since Flushed Away

So where is 2 Guns headed (domestic)? 65 to 70 million?
