Blue Jasmine: more or less than 25 million?
Blue Jasmine, the yearly film by Woody Allen, opens soon. Reviews are very positive so far for the comic drama, particularly for Cate Blanchett's lead performance, which many claim is Oscar worthy. How do we expect this to perform? Will it top To Rome with Love's domestic total of 16 million? Can it reach 25 million?

Re: Blue Jasmine: more or less than 25 million?
Allen is usually hit or miss, but his only three movies from the last decade to get into the green on Metacritic (Match Point, Vicky Christina Barcelona, Midnight in Paris) are also the only three to make over $20 million. With this looking likely to have raves similar to that movie, it should do very well, though it's going to have art house competition from Fruitvale Station. I would pin it at a $15-20 million finish right now, but it could go even higher if it resonates with audiences.

Less. I thought To Rome With Love made a lot less though I think that gross was out of goodwill from Midnight In Paris.

Anyone know the release plan for this? I assume just NY/LA next weekend.

Re: Blue Jasmine: more or less than 25 million?
Reviews have me really interested in this one. Hope it does well and opens here. Sounds like it will be better than Midnight in Paris and To Rome With Love, though both were enjoyable enough.

This had a great opening day though a great opening was expected. Will be interesting how it expands.

Re: Blue Jasmine: more or less than 25 million?
Blanchett has a good following of her own and this movies suits the typical arthouse fanbase, so this opening is not really surprising. Nothing to take away from the opening cause its still great. Let's hope it does great in expansion from here on, getting mainstream audience will be a challenge for this one compared to Woddy's last two movies.

The release strategy is good atleast they are not jumping the gun and releasing it on many theaters right away.

Yeah, this is definitely happening now. This weekend's expansion was insane.

Re: Blue Jasmine: more or less than 25 million?
I would have guessed less than $25M but after seeing a second straight incredible weekend for it, I'm not so sure now.
I saw the movie today, by the way. It's quite good on the whole but Cate Blanchett is absolutely incredible in it. It's the kind of performance that's so forceful that it will probably drive word-of-mouth on its own.

Re: Blue Jasmine: more or less than 25 million?
Yeah the expansion this weekend is very surprising. It will be exciting to see it if can now make more than MIP. Its surely getting past $25m at this speed.

Re: Blue Jasmine: more or less than 25 million?
It will not be as crowd pleasing as Midnight in Paris, which will become a problem once it expands past the big cities.

pepe pippen wrote: More or Less than MIP would be the real thread.... It's so obvious that won't happen though. That film was much lighter and more accessible. Like David said, this won't expand as well as that did when it moves outside of the big cities, IMO. Will still be a big success though.

Re: Blue Jasmine: more or less than 25 million?
yeah, I would be very surprised if this catches on with a wider audience as although Blanchett is brilliant in it the movie is pretty depressing.

Re: Blue Jasmine: more or less than 25 million?
This is looking like it will be in over 1,200 theaters this weekend, making it Allen's widest release yet, beating the count for Midnight in Paris (1,038).

It is interesting how much higher Annie Hall and Manhattan are compared to the rest, even celebrated successes such as Hannah and Her Sisters and Midnight in Paris. Allen was truly in the brightest spotlight for a few years there.

Missing in the adjusted list are BANANAS ($39.6m) and TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN ($40.2m)...

mark66 wrote: Missing in the adjusted list are BANANAS ($39.6m) and TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN ($40.2m)... Nice catch - - and I now also noticed it's missing the first Woody Allen directed movie I (or anyone else) ever saw - - What's Up, Tiger Lily?, though the only reference I can find to it's box office performance is this... Quote: Woody had been a successful TV writer and nightclub comic, but he was still pretty much unknown in movies. It was his idea to take this Japanese detective movie and dub in funny dialogue which he improvised on the spot. All Woody ate while making What's Up Tiger Lily? was Hershey bars and nuts. The film was ahead of its time. It came out in 1966 and took about a decade to recoup the $300,000-400,000 it cost. ...which adjusted would come out to about $3 million. Not to mention his film acting and screenwriting debut the year before with the mega-hit What's New Pussycat? which made an astounding $152m adjusted at the box office! David wrote: It is interesting how much higher Annie Hall and Manhattan are compared to the rest, even celebrated successes such as Hannah and Her Sisters and Midnight in Paris. Allen was truly in the brightest spotlight for a few years there. Also, it shouldn't be underestimated how popular Woody's early 70's movies were - - Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, But Were Afraid to Ask, Sleeper, and Love and Death were big hits back in the day that everyone was talking about. They all made the top 20 list of highest grossing movies in their respective years. (BTW, here's a fancied up Woody Allen adjusted box office list.)
