 Re: Oblivion (International)
That is a great start. As expected with no competition overseas this will do well till two more weeks after which IM3 will crush it everywhere. It needs to get past $150m-$200m OS before that.

 Re: Oblivion (International)
Oblivion grossed an estimated $61.1 million overseas this weekend.
Any concern that Rock of Ages or Jack Reacher might have affected the star's global drawing power are now buried under $61 million. The film took the top spot in 48 of the 52 markets it opened in. The film did exceptionally well in Russia, posting $8.6 million over the weekend -the most successful opening weekend in Russia for Tom Cruise.
Oblivion's biggest numbers came from the UK & Ireland ($7.9M), Korea ($4.1M), France ($3.9M), Australia ($3.6), Spain ($3.1M), and Mexico ($2.8M). Universal is reporting the film has conquered the entire Eastern Europe, Latin American and Middle East markets.
Oblivion's opening weekend overseas is 22% ahead of director Joseph Kosinski's previous film, TRON: Legacy, which reached a $228 overseas cume. It is a significant improvement above Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher; a 70% increase over that film's opening weekend will surely mean it will beat Reacher's $150 million overseas cume. The film is on par with the opening weekend for last year's Snow White and the Huntsman, which went on to gross $241 million overseas.

 Re: Oblivion (International)
It's a science-fiction movie with a event feel to it. They are, to a certain degree, an easy sell. Whoever it starred, it was going to open well. I'm glad for Tom, and I feel that his star power certainly didn't hinder it, but I'm wondering how much it actually helped it too.

 Re: Oblivion (International)
I think only bigger movies or star cast allows movies to open big so $60m+ OW for this has Cruise's hand for sure. Also not many sci-fi movies are big in OS markets, definitely not THIS big.

But Oblivion should make at least 350 million overseas. Here are some films with strong sci-fi elements: Tron made 228 million, Thor made 268 million, Star Trek made 127 million, and Prometheus made 276 million. I think that was all the star-less big scifi movies from recent years, exluding Avatar. So you gotta give Cruise some credit here.

Yep I don't see this making $350m with ease.

 Re: Oblivion (International)
It's true that with that opening it should be tracking towards 300 million.
But Cruise tends to attract also older crowds - His long-time fans are in their 40's and 50's - and thus his films tend to be leggy, even when the WOM isn't that good. That's why I think it's going towards 350 million.

 Re: Oblivion (International)
I think IM3 releasing close by is a bigger factor this time otherwise I would have said that $350m would happen.

 Re: Oblivion (International)
OBLIVION will drop only around 30 % in Germany, but the small drop is weather related (beautiful summer weather in all of Germany the 1st Weekend, lousy, rainy weather in Mid- and Southern Germany the 2nd Weekend)...

I'm always happy when weather isn't too good on the weekends. I hope Oblivion stays flat here.

Movies that have the best chance of getting to China are big science-fiction/action movies, and starring Tom Cruise, an international movie star, will only help it get released here. It's opening on 10th May.

Bigger drop than expected for Oblivion. It should get past $250m though $300m is not 100% assured.

 Re: Oblivion (International)
Another big drop. It was possibly demolished by IM3's arrival in majority of its markets. Looks like $250m OS is the best bet for it now.

My local multiplex, per day:
Django Unchained showings: 12 Iron Man 3 showings: 9 Oblivion showings: 3
The same happened with Jack Reacher. Are Universal not liked in China or something?

 Re: Oblivion (International)
The openings were quite good but I believe it was obliterated by IM3 in most of the markets. Had IM3 seen a regular sequel jump then Oblivion would have done $250m OS I believe.
