Post how come Enchanted from 2007 was not a bigger hit at the box
this movie looks like it had the ingredients to be a big holiday hit. A potential 200m grosser. It had the Walt Disney brand, was a princess movie, and was also parodying the genre in a Shrek type way, yet it made only a decent but somewhat underwhelming 127m. Anyone have any theories?

It was certainly not considered underwhelming at the time. The opening was the 2nd biggest ever behind Toy Story 2, and its total was the best for the decade up to that point for a Thanksgiving release.

It did fine for its run. It wasn't a hybrid of animation and live-action which is still a hard movie to sell to its target audience.

If we do need a reason, I'm going to go with Patrick Dempsey being an incredibly boring male lead hampering its box office potential.

That's a pretty good call. He failed the all-important James Marsden Road Test. Basically, your job is to is to try generate more chemistry with the female lead than the talented, but not explosive James Marsden. Graduates include Hugh Jackman and Ryan Gosling. Casualties include Brandon Routh. Dempsey had to be held back and was last seen failing to woo a girl from Shia Leabeouf onscreen.

I don't seem to remember, but were expectations really that big for Enchanted back then? I always thought it did pretty well actually.

Patrick Dempsey was horrible and bland and the film itself wasn't as good as it could have been.

As xiayun said, it was definitely not seen as underwhelming at the time. It did about as well as expected, if not perhaps a little bit better. It's also worth noting that it had been a while since Disney's last successful princess movie (which was, what, Mulan?), so unlike Frozen, it didn't have a recent wave of well-received hits to revive the subgenre before it came out.

Other than the opening half hour, it was deadly dull.

Amy Adams = A+
Songs = C
Screenplay = F

...and Idina Menzel really looks far better when she sings tenor (ten or twenty miles away).

Dude, speaking of Idina Menzel, what kind of bullshit was having her in what is at least partially a musical and not having her sing? Another strike against it, and why it clearly didn't do more than it did. Patrick Dempsey being extremely dull in it, and Idina Menzel not singing.

It did great for a musical. It did great for a animated/live action movie. It also pretty much restarted the Disney princess crave. In its environment it did great and was quite a surprise to many.

Agree with 1924, 127m is not fine, so what's next, Princess and the Frog total gross was descent?, both were disappointing

Slightly underwhelming. But it was a little before its time. Also what everyone else said. Dempsey, and Idina not singing. What the hell!

This is still one of my favorite movies, I was just watching it on TV a few days ago. Amy Adams was robbed of an Oscar nomination here.
