Celeste & Jesse Forever Box Office Info: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pa ... orever.htm

Random film comparison I know, but the opening weekend and current expansion plan seems similar.

That opened in 4 theaters with a $26,946 average. Stoker opened in 7 and looks to have an average just above $20,000. Had Stoker opened in 4 rather than 7 I believe the average would have been similar, if not slightly above Celeste & Jesse's. In its second weekend Celeste & Jesse was in 18, Stoker is supposed to be in 15. In its third weekend Celeste & Jesse was in 67 theaters, and Stoker is estimated to be in 76.

Eventually Celeste & Jesse managed to expand to 586 theaters, with fairly disastrous results. Went on to gross a total of $3,094,813 in the US. Now, I'm hoping Stoker can eventually expand that wide, but it remains to be seen.

David Poland says:

Quote:
Stoker doing $23k on 7 screens is NOT good. Searchlight doesn’t seem to have believed this was a commercial movie and continue to prove it. If they had gone out and sold it as a straight thriller, I think it could have opened to at least what $10m… but is that good enough to make it worth the risk of the marketing spend? Welcome to the great indie distribution question of 2012-2015.

I have thought of how Stoker may have done if they'd just gone wider with it and mis-advertised it, but I don't believe it would have opened to 10 Million or more. Depending on the weekend and how wide, 6-7 Million could have happened. But mainstream audiences probably would have turned on the film pretty fast. Though at least I'd get to see it then ;). I am thinking when they eventually give the film its big expansion (hopefully 500 theaters or so) they should just advertise it as a straight-thriller in its TV spots. I do believe it definitely would have performed better in wide release than the upcoming weekend's Dead Man Down will.

The point is, for the most part, films in this horror/thriller genre rarely do great Box Office in limited release. It did do solid this weekend, but I'm not sure how it will do as it expands.

It's not a commercial movie in the slightest. Won't do more than a couple million dollars. But it's a wonderful film regardless and I hope it gets a passionate audience, no matter how small.

But if advertised as one it could have tricked a decent amount into seeing it ;).

You don't want to anger people like Killing Them Softly did by mis-advertising it. But the opening wasn't good. Perhaps it wasn't ever going to make big bucks.

The opening was decent considering movies of this genre rarely do well in limited release. I think a big reason it did is because of Park Chan-wook's following.

Who really cares if audiences hate it as long as it gets their money? :P It's not a hard movie to market to be honest. Well, if you don't care about being honest anyway ;).

Here are some cool international TV spots:

Don't imagine we'll see any here in the US until the time it's going on its third weekend. Wouldn't make sense to have them yet.

When the remake of Oldboy comes out in the fall and people who don't know any better see Stoker at the store and it says "From The Director of Oldboy" they'll think Stoker is "A Spike Lee Joint." ;)

I don't think the WOM will be terrible for this one. And those TV spots above sell the film fairly well - they should be used in the US.

This did really disappointing this weekend. Would have been better off expanding to new markets and not just adding more theaters in the markets it's already in.

Weekend #1

Celeste & Jesse - $107,785 - 4 theaters ($26,946 average)
Stoker - $160,547 - 7 theaters ($22,935 average)

Weekend #2

Celeste & Jesse - $125,043 - 18 theaters ($6,947 average)
Stoker - $114,326 - 17 theaters ($6,725 average)

Has anyone seen any TV spots for this here in the US yet? I was thinking we might see a couple on cable or something this week being that it's seeing a bigger expansion.

It's over 90 theaters for Friday on MovieFone. I believe this is getting 100 theaters or so this weekend.

Here's hoping it can manage a $3,500 average this weekend. At least a decent amount above $3,000.

Did anyone here see this tonight in a theater where it's new to the area? If so please do a crowd report :P. I'm curious if it's doing ok at the new theaters.

I think it's safe to say Celeste & Jesse will have the larger gross. Stoker probably won't be doing 2 Million. I'm thinking it might possibly be able to get 1.9 Million ;).

Weekend #3

Celeste & Jesse - $246,927 - 67 theaters ($3,685 average)
Stoker - $266,000 (estimate) - 94 theaters ($2,830 average)

In its fourth weekend Celeste & Jesse expanded to 586 theaters. No idea if Fox Searchlight will decide to take the plunge with Stoker, but I am hoping so it might open here. It even had a 12 Million budget. They would have been better off just making this a wide release I'm telling ya. As is it's kinda a flop.

From Thompson on Hollywood:

Unspectacular expansion for Park Chan-wook’s mystery with Nicole Kidman, with a PSA much below what Searchlight’s underperforming “Hitchcock” came in at with double the theaters.

What comes next: This expands to 250 theaters – likely its widest release – next Friday.

Yeah this didn't do well at all....maybe it would have been better off with a wide release.

The performance of this film is rather embarrassing. :disgust: Celeste & Jesse had about the same average in 586 theaters.
