 October 5-7 Predictions
Taken 2 should open similar to The Bourne Legacy ($38.142M) and will 99.999% stay at #1 until PA4 comes out. As for Frankenweenie, I'm predicting something in the mid-to-high teens as it faces competition with Hotel Transylvania. However, it doesn't face any competition for the rest of October. Pitch Perfect could land in the mid-teens, earning third place as it's generating excellent WOM so far and has over-performed in limited release. I know it's early but Taken 2's tracking extremely well: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/en ... 6849.storyQuote: The action sequel "Taken 2," which 20th Century Fox is set to release next Friday, is on track for a strong opening of $40 million or more, according to several people who have seen pre-release audience surveys.
No new movie has opened to more than $40 million since "The Dark Knight Rises" in July. Since then, numerous movies have opened below Hollywood's expectations based on "tracking" surveys, including "The Bourne Legacy," "Resident Evil: Retribution," and "Dredd."
PHOTOS: Celebrities by the Times
Since the weekend "The Dark Knight Rises" premiered, box office in the U.S. and Canada has been down 12% compared with the same period in 2011, according to data from Hollywood.com.
The animated comedy "Hotel Transylvania" is expected to debut with about $35 million this weekend.
If the movie market remains soft, "Taken 2" may not meet its expectations. But audience interest in the film is higher than for any other film coming out in the next four weeks.
As is often the case with action movies, the tracking shows that men are most excited to see "Taken 2." But the sequel starring Neeson is also one of the highest polling upcoming pictures among women as well.
A Fox spokesman said the studio would be happy with an opening in "low 30s." Even that would be a healthy start for the picture, given that 2009's original "Taken," a surprise hit, took in $24.7 million on its first weekend.
That film turned out to be a crowd pleaser, ultimately grossing $145 million. Now that audiences know they liked what they saw last time, they appear to be more excited to turn out on opening weekend for the follow-up.
A strong opening for "Taken 2" could bring some momentum back to the box office, as more people in theaters typically means more people seeing previews and spreading word of mouth, which can help with ticket sales in subsequent weeks.
Recently, that cycle appears to have been occurring in reverse, depressing theatrical grosses.

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
Taken 2 should do 40-45 Million. More wouldn't shock me.
Frankenweenie is going to be hurt by Hotel Transylvania doing well. Should debut to 19-22 Million.
Having a limited opening this weekend was a good idea for Pitch Perfect, IMO. Buzz is strong. Will probably do 12-15 Million next weekend.
Perks of Being a Wallflower is also expected to see a good-sized expansion.

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
Which imbecile decided to open Frankenweenie a week after Hotel Transylvania?? (it is odd that 3 major animated films in a row are spook related btw). It will end up sub $15m.
Taken 2 will probably do $35m which would be great. Depends how well Looper holds up.
EDIT: I realised its a 4day weekend so my predictions are:
Taken - $40m Frank - $18m Pitch - $15m

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
I am very curious to see how Frankenweenie fares in the immediate aftermath of Hotel Transylvania. It's a big request of parents on Disney's part, imploring them to return for a second 3-D Halloween-season animated movie a few days later. And this one is a harder sell, too, between the B&W animation and the tough dramatic subject (the death of a beloved pet).

I mean Corpse Bride opened quite strong as well and I'd say it wasn't a very easy sell either. And that without 3D. Really don't see it opening to less than $20 million.

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
I see Frankenweenie opening in the 17 to 24 million range. It could have done more without the direct competition.

Corpse Bride wasn't black and white though. Besides, that almost seemed like a sequel to Nightmare Before Christmas, which had a really big following. So I don't think it was that hard of a sell. Not to mention it didn't face this kind of direct competition.

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
I am not sure how audiences will react to the B&W animation here. You always mention it as a hindrance, and I'm partly convinced. At the same time, though, Burton's films often verge on B&W anyway, so perhaps this aesthetic won't seem too different from: --the usual. This film seems more accessible than Corpse Bride in certain respects, from the child protagonist to the American suburban setting to the Disney factor, but it is also coming out at a slightly worse time in terms of the strength of the Burton brand. This also doesn't feature the voice of Johnny Depp (strangely enough).

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
I'm pretty sure the same following that Nightmare Before Christmas has will also flock to Frankenweenie and won't just skip it because of black 'n white.

I think some will be deterred by the B&W. Honestly though, I'd predict high 20's if it wasn't coming right after Hotel Transylvania. I don't think the parents who took kids to Hotel will immediately take them to Frankenweenie next weekend. But I do think it will see a solid turn-out from young adults without kids.

Hopefully it does good. It's my most anticipated October movie. Though I'll probably get to see it sometimes in December or so. LOL.

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
Pretty sure ParaNorman and Hotel Transylvania stole whatever thunder Frankenweenie might have had. The trailer seems very tired compared to the previous two movies mentioned. I'd be surprised to see it open over $13 million.
Taken 2 will finally give us the first big opening weekend since The Dark Knight Rises.
Hopefully Pitch Perfect gets over $15 million. It's quite hilarious.

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
I could see Pitch Perfect even beating Frankenweenie this weekend. I was at work today and many of my co-workers talked about how badly they wanted to see Taken 2. I haven't heard this much buzz since Ted and Magic Mike. I'll be shocked if this opened less than $30M. $40-45M range sounds realistic.

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
Hmm, Hotel Transylvania and Frankenweenie will duke it out for the second spot next weekend. It'll be close. I see both falling into the $20-25 million range.
My Top 5 prediction:
1. Taken 2 - $41 million 2. Frankenweenie - $22.5 million 3. Hotel Transylvania - $22 million 4. Pitch Perfect - $16.8 million 5. Looper - $13.1 million
Gonna be a good weekend.

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
With Looper breaking out this weekend great things should be in store for Taken 2. I really can't see anything less than $40M for it now. The buzz is HUGE.

Frankenweenie and Hotel Transylvania are like the same movie in my head. I don't see Frankenweenie opening to $20m+ with Hotel's breakout.

 Re: October 5-7 Predictions
I know its not the best evidence but Frankenweenie should still hold its own against Transylvania. Before opening, HT had around 650-675K likes, Frankenweenie is currently at 629,910. It could very well flirt with $25M next weekend, even $30M.
Taken has added 554,834 fans since June and if we do a comparison with Looper ATM (which was at about 242,000 before opening), we get a $48.6M opening. This comparison seemed to work when comparing HATES and Looper as it essentially predicted around a $21.5M opening for Looper.
