Post The Purge: Anarchy predictions
Opens on June 20th.

I think the first sold its home invasion concept very well, but the film itself wasn't well-received at all. The second just doesn't look very exciting. Expect a major drop-off, but maybe better legs.

I'm thinking:

Opening Weekend - $18 million

Total Gross - $37 million

I actually like this teaser. Haven't seen the first, but while I know the consensus was mixed I found the really bad legs more to the idea that "Today is the Purge" almost like a concert one week only kind of event. This seems like a crazier idea than the first film, but with the small budget I doubt it'll be that great. But I think the first friday should still be good.

I cannot wait for this, but it will not make much money.

$8m / $15m

The teaser shows promise, but the first movie sucked. I wouldn't be too surprised by an opening under $10M.

Probably top out a 50-60 million like the first one.

I'm amazed at the turn around time...this was cast in December, filmed in January, released in June.

I think this looks better than the first. I want to see it. I'm going with a 35 Million total.

This one looks better but the "Won't Be Fooled Again" song plays in my head when I watch the trailer.

$9m/$15m

I really don't think the drop-off will be so huge that it does under 20 Million total.

I can't remember the last sequel to a movie with such weak WOM.

Hostel and Machete probably didn't have much better WOM. Still I wonder if this could exceed the modest expectations of this forum. It'll be the first horror movie in two months, the premise is stronger and I do think that the premise appeals to people enough that if this can differentiate itself, it could still hit a high teens/low twenties opening. Depends how savvy Universal's marketing is.

It doesn't look like horror at all anymore, though.

I don't get this. I imagine anyone who found the concept and advertising of the first scary, particularly the evil/fierce disguises of the intruders, will surely respond the same to this.

Home invasion horror is a potent and distinct horror subgenre. It is a different species of horror.

It's a better movie than the first but nobody who hated that film is going to like this one. Sticking to my initial prediction.

BUMP

Lol, almost no one had faith in this one. I'm really surprised by this films IM this weekend. 1st Film faced Man of Steel and dropped 75%!!!! I think even though Purge 2 is facing Hercules and Lucy this weekend, I think it should manage a better multiplier than the first's dreadful 1.88. Even if it's only 2, it'll be at 57 million. Being that this one is having better WOM, I'm wondering if the next can increase (Maybe if they move it to a Halloween timeslot?)

This movies opening was truly astonishing. When I heard it was tracking so high, I didn't believe it. But then it almost matched tracking.
