Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
So it looks like Prometheus will struggle getting to $120M afterall. It's multiplier is following GL to a t. It's sad actually. Looking at these numbers you wouldn't even think this was summer. More like late August/September.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
Prometheus should get a little closer to 20M with that Friday number. Should hold pretty well on Father's Day.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
I like how on Deadline someone compared Will Smith to Sandler and Cruise for their films flopping. MIB3 is a second sequel in a fifteen year old franchise that took a huge hit with an awful first sequel. And it's still north of $150 mill. That's miraculous.
Sandler, on the other hand, has a flop on his hands. Cruise isn't the star, so it won't affect him badly. Other factors might, but Rock of Ages? No.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
That would be only a 30% decrease in PTA for Moonrise despite nearly doubling its theater count. That would be pretty excellent, and indicate that Focus can continue to be semi-aggressive (Though Seeking a Friend opening next weekend will probably keep them from doing a major expansion until the 29th).

There are still plenty of more big films coming down the pipeline. So don't you fret.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
ERC is saying $10 million for Madagascar, and $4.6 million for That's My Boy.
Now, TO BE FAIR, TMB with any other actor would have been lucky to make $4.6 million in its entire opening weekend probably, so repulsive it looked. But with Sandler, in summer, as arguably the tentpole release of the weekend...that's pretty awful.
Good riddance.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
The top 12 is looking at $120m combined; that would be the weakest June frame since 2005.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
Wow this has turned out to be the most awful weekend, but given that last weekend was amazing and Snow White also opened well this is still fine for June. The biggest problem is that both the movies looked so unappealing this weekend but not even a single $20m+ opener over third weekend of June without a major holdover is just plain awful even worse than any May weekends we have had. Hope Brave saves BO next weekend.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
Father's Day will help, but I'm also starting to think it may not help films as much as before. NBA Final has demonstrated its strength, and the interests would only rise with the pivotal Game 3 on Sunday. This is shaping to be a classic series with stars casual viewers actually care. Then with Tiger contending at U.S. Open, the viewership there should rise as well, and being held on the west coast this time means it's more of a prime time coverage for a lot parts of the country instead of just afternoon.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
I think Father's Day usually helps matinee business, so NBA finals shouldn't effect it too much, though I guess the FD boost will be smaller than normal.
Also, though it's 7 theaters short of a wide release, Hunger Games did have a hold 13% better than the best-holding wide release yesterday, and its PTA increased from last Friday. At this I'm pretty certain Spider-Man is going down.

Prometheus . What a terrible weekend. Avengers might as well be #1 again.

God, these numbers are anemic and depressing.

TDKR better beat Avengers. The use of that "Mother of God" pic is long overdue, for a year like 2012.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
I don't think Father's Day will benefit Prometheus. I just can't imagine dads going to the theater alone without their family tagging along.
A combination of the US Open airing until 10pm et and Game 3 of the NBA Finals will hurt.

Re: Friday Numbers & Early Weekend Estimates
The highlight of this weekend is probably Hunger Games' hold: off 20% from last week, which pretty much guarantees it'll be able to crawl past Spider-Man. Amazing!
I'll be fascinated in seeing what kind of hold it has on Father's Day.
