 Early Friday Numbers
Quote: Early numbers show Adam Shankman's jukebox musical headed for a $19 million-$21 million weekend; Adam Sandler's new R-rated comedy "That's My Boy" headed for a projected opening in the mid-teens.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
That would be an outright bomb for That's My Boy; I know Sandler's had a few dramatic roles that have done far worse... but this would be his worst comedy opening since what, Happy Gilmore?

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Even Little Nicky's opening adjusts to 23 million. Happy Gilmore's to 15 million.
I feel this represents a repudiation of Sandler to a certain degree. A way of general audiences saying they're not going to go see just any P.O.S. by him any longer.
He should be careful with his next few projects. Try to recapture the "magic" of films such as Big Daddy and 50 First Dates. More heartfelt comedies.
The fact this is set to open around ten million lower than Jack and Jill indicates the family crowd is more faithful to Sandler than his original nineties fans, now adult males, at this point.

The film that really established Sandler was Waterboy...

That spells the end of the career of an actor who can't act. Case closed.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
WOW! I had a feeling that TMB would underperform, but sub $20M is just pathetic. Considering the aggressive marketing behind the flick and the fact that there hasn't been a big R rated comedy since 21 Jump Street it should be doing ALOT better. There is really no excuse for it and now Sandler will defintely never do an R rated comedy ever again.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Not a great opening for Rock of Ages either. There's no reason it shouldn't have opened with 27-32 million.

Holy cow that is awful if it holds up to be true for That's My Boy.
Didn't even think that was in the realm of possibilities for it.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
After 21 Jump Street, comedies have just tanked in NA. American Pie and Dictator should have been bigger. Compare that to last year where the summer was saved by all the big comedies.
Perhaps Ted will really break out. The Watch and The Campaign could go either way.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
I knew That's My Boy would not hit 20 million. The character is too crass and unlikable, and the concept is way to crude to be funny. He needs to stick to playing the lovable loser.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
i think we have to wait a bit on TMB; R rated comedy is a natural fit for better business at evening/late night showings so it might do a bit better than this

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
I don't think you can blame Sandler too much on this one. R rated comedies outside of 21JS have underperformed immensely this year (Especially when looking at last year when almost every overperformed)
American Reunion, Dictator, Wanderlust, Casa De Mi Padre, now That's my Boy (Still I think he'll go up, Sandler will do better at night and on Father's Day). Almost all had higher expectations and domestically all kind of burned when it came down to it. Hopefully Ted can break the trend.

Regardless of this trend, this is a star-driven studio comedy with a huge ad campaign, so it misfiring has to be laid at the feet of the star.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
In a completely unproven formula. Time and time again when Sandler goes from his formula he underperforms. I'm fine with him taking the blame, but it does nothing to tarnish his bankability. Little Nicky and Jack and Jill were at least not R, its the obvious cause to the even larger drop in audience.

Yeah, Grown Ups 2 will do fine business next summer. He just won't leave his family-friendly wheelhouse again.

 Re: Early Friday Numbers
Yeah the thing about Grown Ups is my little cousins watch the film are ROFL ing the whole time.
I think these kind of comedians need to make more family comedies...
Stuff like Paul Blart and other crap is stuff we hate on this forum but there is an audience for such films.
