KJ's Summer Box Office Contest 2012



SUMMER's almost here. This year we've got one of the most exciting set of movies to watch and predict from huge movies like The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers to the unknown potentials of Prometheus and The Amazing Spider-Man.

This year's contest covers movies released from May 4th to August 31st, 2012. The player with the most points at the end of the game will receive a $25 gift card.


How the Points Work
Each player predicts the total grosses of 25 movies listed further below. It's the ultimate test in box office predictions: guessing a movie's potential final gross before the season even starts with few, if any, tracking numbers. For each movie, the top 25% of players who predicted most accurately will get 3 points a piece.

Players can also score bonus points. The first is the Summer Top 5. Each players will predict Summer 2012's five biggest films. Each rank correctly predicted with score 1 point. An extra bonus of 15 points is given to any player who correctly predicts the Summer 2012 Top 5 in the correct order.

Finally, players predict the answers to ten various box office questions. A correct answer scores 2 points.

Ties are broken by the difference of all of the total grosses for every movie versus the sum of your total gross predictions.

Question No. 5 is too much of a giveaway. Historically, July is always the biggest month in the summer. I would suggest "Will July 2012 be the biggest month ever?" or something similar to that.

On that note, it'll be interesting to see if the perfect Top 5 prediction still eludes us after the last soon to be 5 box office contests (21 Jump Street's gonna ruin any chances of the perfect Top 5 prediction in the Spring box office contest).

Assuming Dark Knight and Avengers gets #1 and #2, I see only six movies being possibilities of the other three ranks:

Amazing Spider-Man
Brave
Ice Age 4
Men in Black 3
Prometheus
Snow White and the Huntsman

...that leaves 120 different possibilities assuming those are the only movies with a chance. Obviously David has Dark Shadows in the running and BK knows the true possibility of Magic Mike nearly doubling Titantic's gross, so there are always wild cards too.

Anyone who happens to nail it definitely will deserve that extra 15 points, but I don't think I'd be going out on a limb by saying they'd most likely be winning the game without the bonus anyways.
