Post Is Wrath of the Titans in big trouble?

O commented on this in the Mirror Mirror thread, and I feel his concerns ring true: is Wrath of the Titans in big trouble?

This is a major movie, and it comes out in a couple days, and I'm not sensing much hype or even interest. This was always going to be a bit of a troubled sequel since the first film was hardly the word-of-mouth champion of the decade, and the deafening release of The Hunger Games seems to be completely drowning out any attention or interest there might have been. I also feel Warner's ad campaign has been too...modest. As if they aren't even trying to generate much excitement.

Could this open below 25 mil.?

I almost feel as if Warner Bros. should just go nuts and move this to later in the year at the last minute. :P It's going to have a rough go of it. They've fumbled the promotion, The Hunger Games will be the top story everywhere, etc.

On a related note: I can't believe they've done conversion 3-D again after the first film became the poster child for the worst of rushed 3-D.

Were it not for Ghost Rider 2's existence, this would be the most egregious example of a sequel no one was asking for in recent memory.

Clash of the Titans made money but did anyone really like it that much?

As unprecedented as it might be, it might be worth moving this to mid April.

It could open to under $25 m, and potentially finish with less than the first one opened to, given The Hunger Games tidal wave is about to get to theaters. Everyone will get their action movie fix, and the first one wasn't even that well received.

You know, it could pull a John Carter. With WOM on Hunger Games to likely be pretty great I think it will likely over-shadow this. It really looks like it could have done well with the right release, IMO.

I actually think moving it would be the best bet, however last minute it is.

There have been tons of ads with very impressive special effects. It will pass $100M.

I haven't seen much advertising. Maybe watching the wrong channels.

I'm not convinced it'll open nearly high enough to get to 100 mil. I doubt legs will be very good, just because of the type of film it is.

I admit, though, I'm a bit excited to go see it. :P The first has grown on me via lazy-afternoon HBO viewings. It's super flawed, but not awful. And the cast for this movie is very good. I love Worthington, Fiennes, Neeson, and Rosamund Pike. Her casting in particular intrigues me. I'm hoping Fiennes is better utilized this time out.

Well based on the marketing and the total shadow THG has cast over it, it looks to be in trouble. It also has a monster 2nd weekend to contend with (American Pie + Titanic) - so it has an uphill battle.

What may work in its favour is that apart from THG being mega huge - there isnt much else in the marketplace with so few major films released this month. That could save it.

Best case is a $40m OW but $30m is more likely.

I agree with others - move it to mid/late April and it should be fine. Its actually not too late.

I just like how the trailer features Marilyn Manson's cover of "Sweet Dreams." I felt like I was transported back to 1995 and watching the goth kids at my high school blast that from their parked cars in an attempt to annoy the preppy crowd.

This could very well open to #3 next weekend.

Or #4 depending on how 21JS holds this weekend. :|

Even though the use of the Marilyn Manson song is super dated and cheesy, it's also kind of awesome. It gets me pumped every time I see the trailer. :P

I thought that was Rosamund Pike in the trailer, but I thought my eyes were mistaken as I didn't expect to see her in a movie like this. I love her, but not enough to see this.

The ads I have seen though are definitely good. They make it look better than I'm assuming the first was and it seems much more epic.

I think it looks better than the first. I wouldn't be surprised by a 40m opening.

This does look like something in trouble though it would depend on how much interest it generates next week. It does look good but I would have dropped that 3D from the movie's marketing. Still though this will be BIG in OS markets maybe not as big as the first one.

I enjoyed the first one overall (against my own better judgement), and as I noted in my review there was one moment in it, that by itself was worth the price of admission to me.

However, there's one big problem... the director of that first film, Louis Leterrier had proven himself previously to have a deft hand with subtle comedy in otherwise serious action pics (eg: Transporter 2) - - unfortunately, they didn't bring him back for the sequel, instead hiring Jonathan Liebesman, who's filmography is seriously underwhelming so far.

Unless, I run out of better films to watch in April, Wrath of the Titans looks like it's a pass for me.

(BTW, Louis Leterrier's next film comes out in 2013 - - Now You See Me, for which IMDb's synopsis reads:
Quote:
FBI agents track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.
...and stars Woody Harrelson, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher, Jesse Eisenberg, and Common - - now that sounds like my kinda movie!!!)

Since this is from the director of the rather crap Battle: Los Angeles, there is no way the 3-D will be good. Nothing destroys the illusion's (limited, but at times potent) appeal faster than hand-held photography and rapid-fire editing. Your eyes need time to absorb the depth of a shot.

I think it has been in big trouble, at least domestically, since the day it was announced.

To a certain extent, perhaps, but I do feel it ended up with an extremely dire, unhelpful release date.

The TV ads for this are incredible. If I didn't know better I'd be really hyped.
