Re: Weekend Estimates
Andrew Staton's 3D sci-fi epic John Carter hit $30.6 million in its North American debut thanks to an uptick on Saturday, while the film opened internationally to $70.6 million for a total $101.2 million.http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/b ... fice%20(36)%20(1)&utm_content=

Re: Weekend Estimates
Disney is really cleaning house this morning. I can not see this crossing 100 million. The good thing is office will get back on track next weekend.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Well atleast JC cracked $30M and didn't go sub $20M like tracking predicted, but still it's pretty sad how badly Disney shot themselves in the foot with this one. Like Magnus already said this would have been considered a decent opening for a niche sci-fi/fantasy with no established fanbase and no big name stars. But, for a flick that cost an estimated $350M with marketing it is not good at all. Even with a B+ cinemascore I can't see it having great legs especially with so much competition coming up. Wrath Of The Titans skews toward some of the same audience and that could potentialy kill it. Overall this wasn't a bad weekend at all. 2012 is still steam rolling 2011 and we are finally ahead of 2009. We should be able to top 2010 throught the rest of the month.

Poor Silent House. Its F CinemaScore makes no sense to me.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen's Saturday increase was amazing.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Journey 2 is holding well but $100m is not yet guaranteed, still though given that it will come quite close to that mark I believe WB will provide a slight push.

Re: Weekend Estimates
I wouldn't have expected The Vow, Safe House, and TMW to hold better than The Artist.

Re: Weekend Estimates
Just noticed Lorax also becomes this year's biggest domestic title after just 10 days of release.

There's also a slight correlation with box office - lower the box office means lower the grade. I guess mainstream crowds have their opinion of how good a movie is colored by how full the theater is. I haven't seen the film yet but if they didn't like the ending that'll kill it further. There may be something else going on too with Devil Inside receiving the score so recently - maybe everyone just wants more PA.

I'd say it's pretty assured at this point. It's over 90M and just finished a near 4M weekend, so even with fumes it should just scrape by.

Re: Weekend Estimates
^ The other side of it is that, it is still below $91m with barely above $3.5m weekend, will start to loose some theaters now even with no so many new movies and Warner Bros. releasing their next movie about 3 weeks later. Add to that 21 Jump Street will take some of the Rock audience and The Hunger Games after that will deprive it from most of the female audience. Last two weeks it has seen higher drops, this week it could have held a little better (not a bad hold, but still). Another 40% drop next week and it goes to $2.3m with a total around $94m which means it would need a multiplier of 4 from there on, cannot always say it is guaranteed, but yes if WB pushes it with Wrath and then keeps it afloat for a number of weeks in good amount of theaters it would scrape $100m.

They tend to get less promotion, and they are less likely to look appealing.

Re: Weekend Estimates
I'm not sure Journey 2 will make 100m. The PTA is pretty low; it will drop theaters quickly soon.

Re: Weekend Estimates
I have been trying to say that for a long time - Journey 2 was never a sure thing for $100 million (though I did project it to be within its potential range) and people couldn't understand why I had any doubts about $100 million...
BTW, apologies, but there will be no analysis of the last weekend by me. Too busy right now. It'll be back next weekend.

I agree that's true - I was just thinking of the countless terrible big openers that always seem to manage a better grade than they deserve. The highest opener I know of at the moment to receive below a B is The Last Airbender. Even Green Lantern got a B.
