Post The Chronicle (2012) Predictions

Based on the YouTube views, it seems to be getting an enormous amount of buzz. However, for this type of film, that's not shocking. It opens Super Bowl Weekend. It doesn't seem it cost Fox too much so I see it making a lot of money back. I see an opening similar to last year's Skyline. What do you guys think?

That looks a hell of a lot better than Skyline and one of the better trailers I've seen all year. Best use of the "camera" technique since Cloverfield. I would not be surprised if it took the Superbowl crown from Hannah Montana. But I'll be safer and say

23/50

This has a lot of potential, though the SB opening doesn't help.

$19m/$59m

Cool trailer, but I don't see this breaking out either. It looks a little to sci-fi heavy to appeal to the casual docu drama loving mainstream audience and found footage films have mostly been successful in the horror genre lately and that doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon. I see Push numbers for now,but maybe a slightly bigger opening due to the marketing.

The trailer is definitely a good one but I think the WOM will be poor (I think they will dwell too much into psyche of the characters). I see a good opening but poor legs.

$18m/$40m

Now this is a badass t.v spot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NKtKS3JJ5g.

If they can keep the trailers looking as good as this, then I can definitely see a breakout. Atleast now I'm more interested in seeing it.

It would be great if it opens that high, MG Casey. Not that I disagree with you but why did you predict that? I wouldn't be shocked if that happened though.

The main problem is it will do terrible on Sunday. Movies that open that weekend usually appeal to women and those who don't watch the Super Bowl. Chronicle could drop 50% on Sunday.

I could be way off, but I'm really digging this one's TV spots. Nice touch of comedy and uniqueness, with a thrilling, slightly creepy ending.

I'm leaning towards flop. I don't believe the found-footage format mixed with the superhero genre will appeal to audiences. Similar to how they almost always ignore horror comedies.

People flood theatres to see found-footage horror because it promises a simple experience with LOTS of jump scares. I don't believe the format will appeal to moviegoers with other genres, particularly one known for big-budget action the way superhero movies are. It'll just seem cheap.

True and these are pretty much the reasons I'm also lowballing it for now. However, alot people did show up for Cloverfield and that wasn't your typical found-footage horror movie. My point is you never know. I really digg the marketing on this one and I think it looks unique enough to attract somekind of sizable audience. Some people should be tired of seeing the same old shit from all these other big budget superhero movies and it's about time for something different cheap or not.

Seems like a marketable idea. I think it could be a surprise breakout.

I see it having a $20m+ OW, a very frontloaded weekend thanks to SB but a good hold in its 2nd week.

At the moment, I'm predicting something in the high teens with a final total in the 40s. But I would not be shocked it crossed the $20m mark in it's OW weekend.

The first set of reviews for Chronicle have hit the web and they are suprisingly really positive. Looks like they might not have stuck with that ridicoulous ending from the script either.

You would never know this was a found-footage movie from the TV spots.

Is it really even supposed to be a found footage movie story-wise? I just thought it was shot with that quality of camera to give it a unique look.

The marketing has been pretty solid. This could be a decent hit. 21/50.

There were some great spots during the NFC game. That was probably the most exposure the movie has gotten so far too. I definitely think it can break $20M+ OW now. The buzz has been building quite nicely for it.

I dont think anyone even uses the term "found footage" outside internet movie forums. General auds will eat this up. It looks good. Its only hurdle is it opens SB weekend.

Good point Magnus. It should make the bulk of its money in the first two days and still have a decent hold in its 2nd weekend.
