Post The Smurfs (INTL) $500m WW
I have a feeling that THE SMURFS deserves an INTL thread...

First the pretty good Spanish opening, this weekend the very good French and German opening day...

Animation movies are doing very well in OS markets and there isn't much competition ahead, still though I don't see this crossing $250m in OS markets. Anyways that would be a very good money overall.

Some more updates on the top grossing markets

Quote:
Premiering in 35 markets on the weekend and pushing its way to the No. 2 spot is The Smurfs, the 3D Sony Animation co-production about the tiny blue creatures adventures in New York City. Sony says first place ranks were recorded in “virtually every market we tracked.”

Weekend take overall was $45.2 million drawn from 5,170 locations in a total of 42 markets. Top four markets were Brazil ($6.65 million from 319 locations), France ($5.9 million from 714 venues), Mexico ($5.5 million from 901 sites) and Germany ($5.4 million from 755 situations).

"Sony says first place ranks were recorded in 'virtually every market we tracked.'" So they only tracked the markets that had Smurfs on top? :funny:

This should flame out with the releases of Apes/Cowboys & Aliens/Captain America/Final Destination 5 in the coming weeks. Cars 2 will make a big impact on the remaining OS markets and will hit Smurfs hard. There's still a lot of European markets yet to open though so with that and China next week, 200m is not out of the question.

From screendaily

Quote:
The Smurfs has already taken more than $56.3m through Sony Pictures Releasing International and opens this weekend in the UK, China, Russia and South Korea as well as a further eight territories.

This means about $4m in 3 days, not so great but given the demo it attracts this number is acceptable. Not sure about other places but I heard in India a lot of schools are taking out all kids from given year(s) to see this movie (generally on concession tickets where they book the whole HUGE screen or two for a school), poor kids :P

This really has done amazing with this weekend's $35.2m though it has now been released in almost all the markets (54 markets), I don't see it releasing in any more big markets. I think it will start dropping from here on and will finish outside of Top 100 WW list with $450m. Needless to say that would be an amazing number, specially with $110m budget.

Definately one of the positive surprises in the internal market this year. It's easily going to make $300m and should give $350m a crack. Who knows, it may even beat Cars 2.

Rise of the Planets of the Apes is doing well also. I thought that would at least dissapoint or bom.

That's a better than expected hold for Smurfs, I guess the WOM is very good overall. So $450m is a lock now but not sure of $500m yet, $525m is out of question IMO.

This is crazy. It still has Italy, Japan and Australia ahead.

$400+ million here we come. If the sequel behaves similarly to Alvin 2, it'll make $700+ million worldwide

After seeing the movie I know why it is doing so well. It is a perfect kids movie and kids will like this better than KFP2 which I think would be more suited to kids for 8-13 years.

It will surely make more than Cars 2 now in OS markets as well as WW total, domestic ofcourse is out of question.

Yeah...$400+ million seems like a lock at this point unless it really underperforms in Italy and Australia.
