I don't understand why Mr. Popper's Penguins' internal weekend multiplier wasn't better...

Yeah me too. It was supposed to be more kid-friendly, even the marketing made it look like that but it did not get any Saturday bump and looks like father's day will also see just a normal hold.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
When so many people already are going with their families to a movie on Sunday, was there really much incentive to go on Saturday? This probably isn't the only factor but could be one...?

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
Penguins did pretty mediocre after Friday.
Also, the drops are quite meh for FD weekend, or really, worse given Hangover/Pirates should be boosted.

While it has become more unlikely, I am still not ruling out $150 million for X-Men: First Class.

Yay for Super 8! The overall BO for June so far though isn't turning as exciting as most of us thought originally.

I suppose if it has a sub 40% drop next weekend, then it might be able to do it. But it's starting to fall quite a bit behind X-Men in total gross and the daily numbers.

Great for Super 8.
I think some movies are being underestimated for Sunday, like Mr. Popper's Penguins, for example.
Just incredible for Midnight in Paris. Can't believe 50 Million is in play for this movie. Nobody could have expected this before it opened. I'm sure SPC is in heaven. It's one of their biggest hits.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
I see many underestimations for Sunday. The Hangover II will not drop 40% on Father's Day. Mr. Popper's Penguins will drop less than that and so will Fast Five. Even Super 8 probably dropped less...I mean it's the perfect Father's Day film.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
Even with Father's Day help, that is a horrible IM for Green Lantern.
Super 8 held alright but really today it has a good chance of increasing over Saturday so the actual should be better.
Penguins did alright.
Bridesmaids and Midnight in Paris continue to do amazing.
Next week, Tree of Life will probably begin to see weekend drops.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
GL's number is ok still it looks like poor WOM is spreading quickly. That's a mighty drop for KFP2...it just can't hold its audience for 2 weeks in a row X-Men and Thor were expected to drop harder, but that X-Men number is a little disappointing IMO Super 8 did well with 40% drop I can see it finishing with $130m-$140m

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
I've noticed an interesting pattern: 06/17/11 Green Lantern $52.7 m 7/1/10 The Last Airbender Par. $131,772,187 3,203 $40,325,019 3,169 3/6/09 Watchmen WB $107,509,799 3,611 $55,214,334 3,611 6/13/08 The Happening Fox $64,506,874 2,986 $30,517,109 2,986 5/4/07 Spider-Man 3 Sony $336,530,303 4,324 $151,116,516 4,252 7/21/06 Lady in the Water WB $42,285,169 3,235 $18,044,396 3,235 7/30/04 The Village BV $114,197,520 3,733 $50,746,142 3,730 6/20/03 Hulk Uni. $132,177,234 3,674 $62,128,420 3,660 For most years since 2003, we've seen alternating superhero movies and M. Night films generally greatly detested by average moviegoers, most of them in the summer.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
IMs in general were pretty poor this weekend, though there's certainly a few big underestimations due to Father's Day. I think there's a strong likelihood Super 8 increases today.

Remember Sunday is just estimate. We don't know how any of the films are actually performing today. I see quite a few underestimations.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
I think that Super 8 might be a little underpredicted. It's not the perfect comparison, but Star Trek increased 14.8% on Father's Day. Sci-Fi movies seem to do well on Father's Day. Even Wolverine dropped just 7% that day. Can't imagine Super 8 dropping more than that.

GL will hold better today. So I'm fine with this OW.

That X-men number is disappointing. I am worried that the studio might have overestimated it like the last two weekends.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
Still, X-Men: first Class' performance looks better when compared to Green Lantern which will likely fizle out before reaching $135 million and by the look of it, won't get anywhere close to X-Men overseas.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
Thoughts:
Green Lantern's opening on the whole seems solid, but the marketing push was so massive that it probably should've opened higher. And the precipitous Saturday decline is alarming.
I expected more for Mr. Popper's Penguins, as well. The 2% Saturday increase is also pretty low, even for mid-June. Guess we'll see if it can survive the Cars 2 onslaught.
Super 8 held very well. Typical drops for X-Men, Hangover II and Panda. It's kind of funny a 26% drop for Bridesmaids actually seems "high."
Outstanding hold for Midnight in Paris. The question of it becoming Woody's highest-grossing film of all time still remains.

 Re: Weekend Estimates (June 17-19)
I don't think that is a question any longer. With that hold and considering it won't have much direct competition for a while...Midnight in Paris is set to stick around for long enough to pass Hannah and Her Sisters.
