I'm not seeing it. I don't think kids as protaganists works particularly well for modern audiences. No big star. Crappy movie name. And I'm not seeing the Cloverfield interest in whatever it's about...

Not feeling it

No way. The appeal of Abrams and Spielberg alone pushes this past 90 mil. Also, it seems destined to get AMAZING reviews and word-of-mouth.

And what exactly is wrong with the title?

I dig clubs myself. The more the merrier. :P They usually double as prediction threads anyway.

Not when you have Spielberg's name attached to it.

Is this a joke?

This is one of like four or five films actually worth getting excited over this summer.

It's more likely to open to 90 million than finish under it.

lol
This is starting to pick up on twitter and the great early buzz will start spreading, it may only open in the 35-50m range but I really doubt it will open sub 25m which would be required to miss 90m imo.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

^ Agreed there is still a worst case scenario that this gets lost in this HUGE summer. Two good things right now for it are Steven Spielberg and good reviews, none of which is a guarantee for this to end big.

Isn't this totally insane? You are all already taking amazing reviews and word-of-mouth for granted two weeks before release. And there is still not a single one critics review. Title says nothing, the posters are even worse, trailers didn't say anything about characters or the story, just some running and explosions. Why the general audience should be interested or care? And by the way Spielberg produced Hereafter, Lovely Bones, Letter from Ivo-Jima and Monster House.

Are you being serious? This is an alien/adventure film with Spielberg's name writ large in every trailer and TV spot and on every poster. And you're discrediting the appeal of this by citing Hereafter? Letters from Iwo Jima?

And loads of critics were shown the film, and they all tweeted super-enthusiastic responses.

Hey, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this gets mediocre reviews, and maybe audiences despise it. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Jesus folks.. It's a movie called SUPER 8 of all things which has to be the dumbest title for a movie that basically tells the moviegoer who isn't into all this viral marketing bullshit absolutely NOTHING.. Perhaps if they actually showed something, hell, ANYTHING, it might pique interest in this beyond the internet..

Unfortunately, this sounds more probable than the 300m club at this point in time. But, it STILL has to end up being as bad as something like The Happening for it to succeed.

Unfortunately though, there's no fixing something that comes out in 2 weeks.. Problem is, is the title of the movie simply sucks and doesn't grab the moviegoer outside the internet to want to see what this is all about..

Hehe, I deem this insane. If it were about OW, I'd agree. It won't open above $90 million.

But for the total, no way it doesn't pass $100 million.

We are assuming that it will have great WOM though. What if the reviews are good but audience doesn't like it....It hasn't yet generated HUGE buzz so I don't think this is insane but less likely

Based on opening weekend predictions this is very possible. 10 million more than Cloverfield...

Sure, I'm in.

I don't think a 25-30 mil opening would be bad at all for this. It's an original film with a kid and Kyle Farnsworth as the lead actors being released in the heat of summer. Can you imagine a group of 15 year old girls or 19 year old bros saying "Super 8 looks awesome! Yeah let's go!". I think the audience will skew older. Dropping a 30 spot would be very good. I think the expectations of this have been inflated by the internet

The Spielberg name means nothing. He's been attached to an insane amount of projects.

J.J Abrams name has got to mean something now at this point though.

The people who actually know who he is would already be going to this movie anyways if the marketing and movie looked exactly the same without J.J. Abrams.
