 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
Kung Fu Panda's number is very alarming. If the Friday number is $11/12 million, then even with a 60% Saturday increase, the 3-Day would be below $50 million. Meaning no more than $70 million over 5-days (less than the original's first five days in release). Hmm.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
25M Fri for Hangover would put it on pace for around 120-125M for the 5 days.
10M for Panda would put it around 60M for the 5 days.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
Hangover is doing very well. Its still heading towards a $125m+ 5-day.
KFP is on the low side but I never believed the KFP winner of the summer or $300m and $400m clubs so its working as expected for me. If anything families no longer want to take their kids to see a film in 3D that will put them out of pocket more than they'd like. This is a more worrying trend for the studios.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
With these early Friday estimates, I'm thinking:
Hangover 2:
Thur: 31.6 Fri: 25 Sat: 20 Sun: 16 Mon: 13
5-Day Total: $105-110 million.
Kung Fu Panda 2:
Thur: 5.8 Fri: 11 Sat: 18 Sun: 15 Mon: 13
5-Day Total: $60-65 million.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
Hangover 2 should be more frontloaded than T4. I'm using Sex and the City 2 as a rough comparison. And I'm starting to think Scottie was onto something with his prediction this weekend.

Isn't he already way off. Plus its seeing so many sellouts that there will be spillover business over the weekend. Also Hangover is not limited to a small fan base like SATC2. This has wide appeal for adults.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
He's off by the numbers, but the general breakdown looks like it could happen.
A 20% Saturday drop may be a bit harsh (thinking high teens anyway), but I highly doubt it drops under 10% tomorrow.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
Scottie is indeed way off already. Hangover wont drop. I see $120m five day as the minimum - for all thr reasons Soze mentions above.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
$25m would be really good. That's an 18% increase from Thursday w/o midnight. Sex and the City 2 had a 15% increase w/o midnight. So it's definitely holding up better than that. And in general, I think chick flicks (especially something like Sex and the City) are Friday films anyways, which makes sense as to why it dropped again Saturday by a decent amount. I think this should stay flat at worst, so $32m + $25m + $25m + $21m + $17m = $120m. And this number could be higher in the morning - BOG's "sources" numbers for Pirates was $38-40m and it ended up with $35m last Friday. The sellouts are pointing to a bigger Friday.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
That's pathetic for Kung Fu Panda 2. Really embarrassing. That would be less than I predicted it to make on Thursday.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
I'm thinking a flat Saturday and $90m over the 4-day weekend for Hangover 2. Don't see it dropping the way Sex and the City 2 did since chick-flicks are more prone to girls night out type of gathering on Friday. The 20% Friday increase is pretty good.

Yeah, Hangover has even been selling out, like, 12:45 AM shows. Once again, I expect it to come in higher than the projected early estimate.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
Panda is shocking. I think we overestimated the first movie's appeal. I know my nephews don't care to see it. And unlike Pixar films it has no adult appeal. Parents probably saving their money to take their kids to Cars 2, Transformers 3, and Harry Potter.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
It's doing less business than the Madagascar sequel. Bizarre.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
I thought Kung Fu Panda was supposed to be the hot new franchise for Dreamworks? It's not even Madagascar if these numbers are true.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
To me, Panda is one of those harder-to-explain disappointments. Very good WOM for the original, not that long of a wait, not a film with more narrow appeals that couldn't expand on its initial audience, and fine release date. To potential not able to pass Madagascar's 4-day opening for its 5 days is just ridiculous. When you consider the 3D surcharge, the degree of decrease in admissions is one of the biggest I could remember for family-oriented, well-received original.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
I have heard that the marketing was almost non-existent and lazy...at least here (Peru) I haven't noticed much but it opens in two weeks.

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
The advertising was very..."Uh, you remember Kung Fu Panda? Well, uh, here's the same characters again. Bye." Not a very electrifying push. Still, though, these numbers are so, so bad.

I have no rooting interest in the Kung Fu Panda movie one way or the other, but I do hope it randomly increases 100% on Saturday to shut everyone up already. lol

 Re: Friday Early Numbers (BOG)
I would agree that the marketing was lazy for Kung Fu Panda. I can't even tell you what this one's about, to be honest. I haven't seen the trailer attached to anything I've seen - the last footage I saw in theaters was the teaser. But even so, I felt like the popularity of the first would cancel that out. Other than Shrek, I definitely think the first Kung Fu Panda was the most well-liked film for Dreamworks. If this is how Kung Fu Panda performs, I don't see that next How To Train Your Dragon doing that well either.

Perhaps Libs can start a "Kung Fu Panda 2 will increase 100% on Saturday" club.
